Title: Got a beautiful "almost new" leather RV sofa for the Eagle
Post by: thejumpsuitman on April 02, 2011, 02:59:08 PM
Allrighty...  Just starting back home from a long 7 hour (one way) drive to get an "almost new" leather RV sofa that came out of a 2006 Newmar Mountain Aire.  According to the owner, it is a $2,495 sofa.  Unfortunately, it turned out to be kind of an unpleasant deal though.  The gentleman had advertised the sofa for $500 and had lowered it a few days later to $400.  While I was on the phone with him and found out how far away he was,(350 miles) I paused, letting him know I would have to consider whether or not it was worth the trip.  He then said "I'll knock off $100 since you are the only one who has called and you have to come so far."

But when we got there and I held out $300, he freaked.  "What?  I need $400, not $300.  I had it advertised for $500!"  I told him "No, it's in there for $400 and I can show you if you would like."  He said, "Yes, show me!".... So I did.  After coughing a little pride and attitude, he pulled up on his pants and went in to ask his wife if it was okay to sell it for what he said.  ::)

She came storming out with major attitude saying "NO WAY!  We can't sell it for $300!"  He then turned and shook his head to me saying "No, we can't do that."  I then said, "Boy, I sure wish I knew you were going to change the deal before I left Charlotte 350 miles ago."  Then the wife turned and asked him if he told me $300.  He said, "Well, I guess I did because he showed me the ad for $400 and I said I'd knock off $100."  So the queen waved her hand and said "Give it to him!  We don't go back on our word."  Then she quickly disappeared back into the house, cussing and grumbling all the way.

The good news is we got a GREAT deal on a nearly new beautiful leather RV sofa...  Woohoo!  And the wife and I both like the color, can you believe it?

Now we start the 7 hour drive home... ;)

No worries Clifford, I already measured it up.  It will fit nicely where we have it planned to go.

Are you going to go ahead and raise the roof while you have the roof off to drop that sofa into place? ;D ;D ;D LOL....Just kidding hope it fits through the door. I am soon to be doing the same thing but I know I will have to go through the front windshield.

No way I could get my couch through the door! The king sized bed probably won't either!

Hopefully the armrests can be removed.  If so, it should make it.  It has the jacknife bed, not a fold out type.

i.m.h.o i really think it was dirty pool to take the extra $100 if you had already agreed on the $500 price as the man did not know you had seen the $400 price and thought he was selling at $400, i would of given him back the $100.

Wed Thur Fri

I can't believe what I'm reading here! The guy said he'd knock $100 off it since Marc, had to drive so far to get it. And $400 (advertised prize) - $100 = $300!

Enjoy the new couch Marc!

The ad I called on was for $400.  I was not sure at that price that I would want to make the 350 mile trip or spend $150 in gas.  That's why he then dropped $100 without my even asking to make the sale.  You're nuts if you think I should have paid more than he offered it for after I made the drive strictly based on the $300 deal!

Marc.... No way should you feel bad about not giving him that extra $100.00.. He made a deal with you for $300 so why someone thinks you should pay $100 more puzzles me.. I would have done exactly as you did...and paid the agreed amount of $300..

Heck, with that line of thinking you should have given him $2500. He probably could have used it.

If I gave somebody a price, even if I made a mistake, I would stick with the deal.  If you want to bring Christianity into it, then "let your yes be yes and your no be no.  Someone's word should be their bond.  They did do the right thing by selling me the couch for the quoted price, even if it was by mistake.

This is my own opinion.
I believe that the guy should have honored the 300 dollar deal without any fuss. Now with that said I would have not posted any of that on this board. This post has nothing to do with buses and has all to to with complaning about some guy that sold a couch. I would have like to hear the positive about you getting a new couch and getting a good deal, but instead you choose to flame the guy.

Well I thought it was an interesting story.  The lesson... Make sure you actually say out loud the dollar amount agreed upon to eliminate any chance of a mixup.

Good story Marc ;) Keep em' comin'. I for one thought it was a pretty positive that you did get a new sofa, and the lesson learned, is that given adversity( a grumpy wife) some folks( the seller) will still do what is right, good for Marc, and a harty thumbs up for the sellers wife. Integrity, still a good concept.  ;) still waiting for some pix though. :-*

The responsibility falls entirely on the seller, and he knew it. As for sharing it, its a good lesson to share. When you give someone a price, make darn sure your clear on which ad your dealing with.

Marc did the right thing by making a stand, and the seller did the right thing by honoring his word. So it all worked out.

Nope.  Still paying full price like most everyone else, just take it in the shorts and move on.  Haven't lost anything that I know of in Alaska as far as I know.

When I built my bus, I took four chairs and a couch to the upholstery shop and had them re-done.  The job done to my satisfaction came in almost five weeks past the appointed finish date, we sat down and talked about it, and the owner forgave just about what Marc paid for his single couch.  He took $325 off the final bill for inconveniencing me and not meeting the agreed upon date.

Point?

"Everything is negotiable"

Marc treated the guy better than I would have it's just me but 300 bucks is to much for a 5 year old couch used or not, and probably is made of ultra/leather and time takes a toll on that material as well as wear.
I don't see anything wrong in the deal myself except the woman getting PO and that is her fault not Marc's and his wife

Hey Clifford?  That your bus on Van's string?  Nice looking Eagle, I wanted to build me a nice looking Eagle, but all I ended up with was a Chicken Hawk ..... Oh well, you win a few and lose a few ... And some of them mothers (like last week) they just burn to the ground.

A woman goes to the doctor all black and blue ...

Doctor: "What happened?"

Woman: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk he beats me to a pulp."

Doctor: "I have a real good remedy for that. When your husband comes home drunk,  just take a glass of sweet tea and start swishing it around in your mouth but don't swallow.  Just keep swishing and swishing until he goes to bed in his drunken stupor."

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

Woman:  "Doctor, that was a brilliant idea. Every time my husband came home drunk,  I swished with sweet tea. I swished and swished, and he didn't touch me!"

Doctor:  "I'm not really surprised.  You see how much keeping your mouth shut helps?"

(I am running silent and deep these days Clifford.)

The late New York Times columnist William Safire was fond of likening column writing to standing under a windmill:  No sooner did you feel relief that you had ducked a blade then you looked up and saw a new one coming down.  Kind of the same deal here, you never know what is coming next or when it is going to hit you.

Some people can survive on a lifestyle like that, but I cannot.

Writing something over here, often it pushes me to have a stronger opinion than I would actually have, or contrive an opinion about subjects you do not care all that much about.  Which often I find, will allow me to run roughshod over nuance to reach an unambiguous conclusion.  Believe it or not, a writer can get sick of his own voice, at least "some of us can."

And then there are the technical geeks who simply cannot get enough of it.  Which I find suffocating and personally mind-numbing.  But then again, I never had my science project done on time all thru High School.

The Bikini post (http://boxcarokie.com/2008/07/26/bikinis-the-reason-men-are-pigs/ (http://boxcarokie.com/2008/07/26/bikinis-the-reason-men-are-pigs/)), was just little something I put up, that has collected a lot of attention from time to time.  Last time I looked it had 27,435 views and has proved to be a regular gold mine of hits for the site.  For some reason it gets attention most every day.  If you want hits, just tag something with "Bikini" and it will bring them in from out of the cold and every dark corner of the Internet, strange eh?

I totally agree with you Len,

"List price" is a fantasy, especially on a used item.  It only offers a clue as to the quality.  I thought $300 was a fair price for what it was.  And I knew I would have more in it than that with the drive, but that's my problem.  Something is only worth what you can get for it, and he said I was the only one who even responded to the ad.

By the way, I'm selling a 1992 Chevy Gladiator Conversion Van... It was $26,000 new but I'll take $1,500 for it!!!   ;D

I think there has been a misunderstanding over what the deal was that we struck... The deal was for $300...  And that's what I paid.  He tried to change the deal to $400 because he "thought" I was calling about the $500 ad...  I was not!  I called on the $400 ad and over the phone, without me asking him to, (and before I drove 14 hours round trip and spent $150 in gas), he offered to knock off another $100, making it $300.  Done deal at $300.

In fact, if anybody owes anybody anything, he and his wife owe us an apology for being so needlessly curt and rude after they figured out that it was his own fault for agreeing to take off more than they meant to.

We burned $150 in gas and spent 14 hours on the road Saturday based on getting the couch for $300.  I give them credit for keeping the deal he made me, but it was his responsibility to keep that deal!  Anything short of that would have been extremely dirty.

Nuff said about this deal.  Anybody with a contrary opinion will never convince me in 1000 years.

Marc, I think you made it very clear what the deal was, and you did the right thing.  Don't even waste any more time trying to justify yourself, some people just aren't happy unless they have something to complain about or someone to point a finger at.  A deal is a deal, and you didn't take advantage of anyone.

I am learning what to post and what NOT to post on this board.  You are right, a lot of people just want to throw opinions out to stir the pot. I don't have time for that kind of foolishness.

If we all stopped posting things because it might offend someone, the board would rapidly become silent as a tomb. I hope that never happens here, because it would be a shame. Keep posting what you want and let the opinions find their own level.

I have no problem with opinions, but to take an opposing stance with the motive of causing controversy is kind of pathetic to me.  I suspect that is what is happening with some people.  That is the kind of thing I was talking about.  I have known plenty of people like that.  Their opinion is the opposite of yours, whatever yours is.  You can see the trends with some people.

A friend of mine lost his job of 18 years two years ago, he was writing and editing at his local newspaper.  Now he is living the effects of the recession while a lot of us are just observing it from the sidelines.  We take vacations involving airplanes and hotels; drive our old buses thousands of miles to visit the same old people and eat finger food.

He travels on miles and house-swap.

We dine out in restaurants for convenience as much as pleasure.  His meals are generally things that other people buy for him.  You most likely would not turn around and go back home if you forgot a coupon for the grocery store.  He does.

Barter?  He does it all the time.  He lives in a world where everyone knows that this month the $5 foot long sandwich is at Subway and his wife only enters Macy's when it is not a one-day sale.

Meanwhile, we all sit around and devote page after page to argue over a lousy $300 couch.

What's wrong with this picture?

If and when this thread goes OT, I'll comment on that.

Marc,

I just scanned the thread. Sounds like you got a great buy. Don't worry about the others, that were fussing at you. You kept your end of the deal, he was grumping about his.

Good find!

I hope it fits well.

God bless,

John

Time to get positive!!! ;D ;D ;D

The couch is in!!!!!  Usually when you hear the phrase, "not an inch to spare" it is a figure of speech... Well in this case, there was literally not an inch to spare!  LOL.

It made me nervous when the frame got so close to the upper cabinets, but it went in without any damage.  Of course I had to take the armrests off and the bottom drawer out.  It fits and looks great!  We are very pleased with it.  Have a look...

And here's how it fits into the scheme of things...

Oh, by the way... On the installation, I took the drivers seat out and should have taken the co-pilot seat out too.  That would have made it much easier.  And I think it would be a must if you don't have a raised roof.

It is kind of funny that a thread about a couch has reached #67.  Won't beat my other one though.  I think it finally died near 400.
