Title: defroster
Post by: desi arnaz on March 25, 2011, 10:32:22 AM
my defroster has never worked properly as the bus temp never gets to more than 170
i did find that one of the blower motors is bad but our dear buddy luke wants $100 to replace it and the cage. my thought is why cant i rig a presto hot air popcorn maker to the defroster tubes and run it off the inverter?  would this work or be too hot? am i a nut?  the presto people say it has been tested to run 1000 hours straight without blowing up.

If you kept fan motor out of restroom. On my 8 it was the same as defroster. Triple ck ground to that motor that seems dead..I had a recent experience that test showed good ground but later found out what I though was good was not enough.I ran new ground and curred problem.

Desi,

I think that's an awesome idea, maybe you could rig it up so when you need a snack, the popcorn comes out the defrost vents.  ;D

the wires on the motor were fried and the cage would not come off. also the water from the engine is not hot enough to do any damage.

You have two very different issues here.  Fixing the defroster is one, but more important is getting your engine temps up where they belong.  If the radiator shutters have been removed or not working, that is a good place to start.

am i a nut?

If you own a bus you are. I would doubt it would last long. Might be kind of a safety issue. I don't want to start a long debate.

MY Opinion

I suppose you could check with Whitney and find some after-market heater/defroster that will run on electricity, but that will probably put you on the way to paying the $100. anyway.  I think the popcorn popper would be too hot and require 15 amps to run continually.  It would also likely be hot enough to cook something or start a fire.  If the water is not getting hot enough, maybe you could get some higher temp thermostats.

A hundred bucks is cheap...esp if that includes the parts and whatever wiring is necessary...Popcorn popper is different... very ingenious... Hair dryer might work as well.  ;D
