We were looking at a used Onan 7.5 kw sitting at a shop in town. The owner was out and a worker was showing it to us. He starts it up and BANG BANG BANG! We swiftly shut it down and removed the cover to investigate the noise. There were a bunch of broken magnets thrown around inside. While this was happening my friend googles "Onan broken magnets" on his I-phone. He finds the exact same story online of a guy who lost his magnets in the same model with only a few hour more on the meter than this one. His investigation found out that Onan received defective gen heads in the late 90's whose magnets unglued. Onan was not replacing them if the unit was out of warranty. The price to fix it was more than the value of the unit.
What model was it?...(looking for a used gen)
