Title: REESE Class III tong weight increase
Post by: Nick Badame Refrig/ACC on March 18, 2011, 03:14:02 PM
Hi Folks,

REESE just announced today that they are increasing their tong weight rating on Class III and above receivers by 50%..

This is great new for some of us towing trailers. This means that a 10,000lb receiver which use to be rated at 1,000lb tong

weight limit will now be able to carry 1500lbs on the tong. This holds true with new and existing receivers.

As soon as I am able to forward the press release from the dealer extrant, I will post it here.

Hope this is good news for some!

They announced it where?  New hitches only, I would imagine?  If you could grab the list of old worn out buses they make bespoke hitches for?    ;D

I don't see the purpose they have always had the class 4 and 5 and the manufacture of the vehicle sets the TW and towing weight  not Reese

good luck

This seems to be a common misunderstanding.

I see hitches that are moved up in rating on a vehicle not approved by the manufacturer for the load.

I am curious to see what there basis is for the increase is though.

Hi Guy's

I'm not talented enough to copy a protected file that I can't copy/paste..

So I took a screen shot and re sized it to upload here. Get your magnify glasses out!

Reese has always doubled the tongue weight and the towing weight on a class 111 when you use a weight distribution type hitch but the manufactures don't

good luck

What do we call the piece the ball mounts thru on 1 end and slides into the hitch and is held in with a pin on the other?

If yours is hollow it is only good for 6000/600.

Anything over that requires a solid one, that will take you to 20000. Just bought one yesterday

It is called a ball mount Joe and the solid is a class 4 and is supposed to be used the class 4 receivers it is not going to be much good using in a 10,000 receiver btw Prevost hitches installed by Prevost are class 3 -10,000 hitches

good luck

Yes agreed. I just wanted to make sure others were aware of the limitations of the "ball mount".

Some Prevo are 20000 receivers.

If you open the back doors and look down it will be stamped in that plate.

My 1996 was 10,000 I think that was the first year for a factory hitch on Prevost
