Title: The Titanic Returns Home!
Post by: pabusnut on March 11, 2011, 06:37:22 PM
I got the bus back this evening!  Yahoo!

Last week I finally took it to York Spring (Paul's Garage--family of Wolf's Bus Lines) to get the brakes adjusted, and my air leak fixed.

They found that one of the right rear air bags was leaking badly, and the other one wasn't but probably would have been shortly.  When I would shut it down, it would sink like the Titanic on the right rear corner.

Luke supplied the new air bag assemblies and a new leveling valve, and I asked Paul's to them on.

Now the only problem is that the right rear rides higher than the left rear by a few inches, so it list to the Port? side.  My wife was following me home, and thought they hadn't fixed it.  I guess I'll be saving my pennies for the left side now!

The bus is a 73 GMC 4905A.

I would appreciate directions on how to adjust one or the other leveling valve, and How To Do It Safely!

Thanks!

Not familiar with GM  but on prevost and Mci the rod from the leveling valve to frame is adjustable. the last one I did just had to hose clamps over a hose that covered a break in the rod. loosened clamp and pulled rod out a little and re tightened. Can measure from bottom of bay door down or space between frame and rubber bumper on differental and get same on both sides. 5 1/2 inches comes to mind on axle housing to frame. about 12 inches from bottom of bay door down.  GM guys should chime in here with exact measurements for your application..

Thanks Bob,

I do have the service manual, but don't remember seeing that covered anywhere.

I guess I will have to do a little more research tomorrow afternoon, instead of a nap!

Block up the bus.  If you get that adjustment pulled the wrong way the valve will dump the air and the bus will settle.  Your being under the bus and without cribbing will not change the height to which the bus settles.  SAFETY! :o ;D

Good luck,

John
