I needed to remove the non standard alternator that the P/O had installed to replace the old 50DN. The easy way to get to it was to remove the air cleaner assembly. Once I had it out, I opened it up, and found a huge dry air filter inside... no oil cleaner like what was in my old GM. The filter just sat on what looks to be the original base pan and you sat the rest of the cannister on top, buttened it up and installed the whole thing back in the bus. I'm just not sure I have everything inside. I can't tell for sure, but it seems the filter should sit on some thing besides the base. Maybe should have some big spongy seals inside or something. If you got it crooked inside then it might not seal completely, etc. Just looks like it's missing stuff to me. The filter element looked clean, but that also made me wonder if it's really filtering anything or is it all leaking past the filter.
Anyone else have a setup like this?

I have the same bus. It's just a big can, put the filter inside (make sure you have the proper filter, it should fit snug inside when you bolt it together) and that's all there is. The filter should have a foam ring on the bottom.
