Title: A/c on Honda generator power
Post by: bottomacher on March 08, 2011, 07:09:51 AM
I've decided not to install my Onan 2 cyl. air cooled diesel generator. Does anyone know for sure (from experience) that a Honda eu2000 generator will handle a Carrier 15,000 btu a/c? I'm concerned about the surge at startup.  Thanks, folks.

Well, I know for sure that my Honda EU2000 will NOT start my Dometic Brisk-air 15K rooftop AC.  Tried it once, for fun, since I already had the Yamaha 3000 watt inverter that I actually use for the bus.

sorry.  I have heard lots of people say they can start 13.5K AC units with the Honda, but I don't have one so I haven't actually seen it done.

I know this doesn't help but I have ran my 13.5 for 3 days on one.

Good choice-I have a 6kw DJB air cooled 2 cylinder Onan Diesel at the house for stand by power and even in a sound enclosure you can hear it 100ft away.

I would feel comfortable power an A/C with at least a 3kw generator.  Good Luck, TomC

One way to accomplish this is to run the A/C through a power-supplementing inverter such as the Xantrex/Trace SW series, Victron, or MasterVolt.  The inverter will handle the start-up surge and then the A/C will run fine on power passed-through from the generator; you'll even have a little left over for battery charging.

Thanks to all for the replies. It looks like I may now sell my Freedom inverters and get a pair of eu2000 generators and a sw3000 inverter. This thing will never be finished...

The Hard-Start-Capacitors work great, they lowered my stsrt up amps to about 10 amps for the 15K A/C.
