Dont know if you have heard of Straight talk. You can get it at walmart or online. A plus right now is if you get a phone online, they have a couple of phones on there that are free when you purchase a months service. There is a 30 dollar service and a 45 dollar service. 30 gets you 1000 minutes, text, pics, 411, etc.  45 gets unlimited everything. You just activate it when you want to use it and pay for a months service. They use the same towers as verizon, so, they have the best coverage out there. Web address..........straighttalk.com

I have Verizon. I called when I went to Mexico and it only cost me $5 per phone to use it down there. I called and had it done just for the month.

I know I am not Clifford, but I cannot resist the urge to chime in anyway.

Clifford, like me probobly has a "regular" At&T phone and service plan. If you loose or break your phone and your contract is not eligible for an upgrade, AT&T will hit you hard for a replacement handset.
You can buy a "Go Phone" starter kit almost anywhere. It comes with a few prepaid minutes. After you use them, provided you have not lost your old phone you just pop the sim card from you old phone into the new one. It works without doing anything else. Your number stays the same and all that jazz.
I also "save" my contact list to the sim card. When I get a new phone I use the same sim and all my numbers are still in the phone.
We all know the worst part of having a phone go down is the process of rebuilding all the lost contacts.

If you loose your phone, you can still use the go phone and just drop by an AT&T store and they will give you a sim card that has your account on it. No muss, no fuss.

This is debatable as most things are, but AT&T service works in 99% of the places I travel. I run all over the country and Canada and almost always have service.

If you happen to travel overseas you can buy a Pre-paid sim card to use in that country and save paying high per minute fees from AT&T also.

Hope this helps.
Justin

John, Gary W beat me to it, but I've used the Tracphone. They're less than 10 bucks for the phone and you can buy as few as 200 minutes for 20 bucks and that gives you 90 days of service. If you call alot, there are less expensive similar plans but Trac seems to be everywhere. Good luck, Will

If your phone uses sim cards and is unlocked (which is generally the case outside the US) then you can get prepaid sim cards here and get a US number (+1 then 3 digit area code and 7 digit number).

Prepaid sim cards are nowhere near as easy to find in the US as in most of the rest of the world though.
