Title: Recent MPG info
Post by: Lin on March 06, 2011, 09:07:47 PM
On the trip we took a couple of weeks back to Death Valley, we were towing the Jeep, had lots of hills, and often were traveling at 70mph.  We got about 6.5 mpg.  We just took a slightly different trip: no toad, totally flat terrain, and tried to stay between 60 and 65 mph.  We got 7.9 mpg.  It seems also that the 8v71 is really a great flatland engine.  It has just the right amount of power.  Now, if I can find a way to remove the hills from California!

Adding a turbocharger really flattens the hills out.  Good Luck, TomC

You have a stick or an auto trans? 871, 671, or 692 ?

I just wonder what my fuel milage would be if i didn't run my 21kw genny going down the road.

As mentioned, it is an 8v71.  I should have included that it has an Allison 647 with N65 injectors.  I should also add that fuel was $4.19 in CA and $3.79 in AZ.

This will surely open up a can of worms for sure, but I am going to throw it out there.

As best as I can figure it, our Genset is using about a 1/2 gallon of fuel per hour.  I have no "scientific basis" for this claim, just using figures I have acquired from time to time, at best it is a "guess-ti-ment of consumption" but I feel it is pretty close to actual.  As for MPG we stopped figuring it altogether, you are still going to have to fill it up, it is still is going to get you down the road good mpg's or bad.

As close as I get the figures I am at 7.8 MPG with the genset.  I don't drive over 65 and that was flat country going north on Interstates from Houston, Texas to Ponca City, Oklahoma.  I ahve not done the figuring with Bio Diesel but in everything else I run it has been around a 10 % loss of power and milage.

I don't have to keep track of my fuel consumption but I like to know how much of the gig money I get goes for paying the bus.

The generator uses about 3/4-1 gallon of GAS every hour. (Onan 6.5kw)

The bus gets about 6-8mpg closer to the 8mpg since I put in the new injectors. (6-71 with advanced timing and N65 injectors)

Most of my driving is around the west Tennessee Memphis area (north Mississippi, eastern Arkansas) so not many big hills. But because it is mostly local driving I am doing about 50% local streets and 50% highway.

That sounds exactly right.  Same fuel useage with my 6.5 gas in our Wanderlodge.
