Post by: mamacakes on February 26, 2011, 08:05:53 AM
Hello
Looking for information on changeing out the  worn king pin's on our 4104.They are not totaly gone yet but the bus does pull to the right a bit. Any one have digram's off how to take them apart? We have our maintance manual that shows how ro remove the hub and replace it but it does not show how to remove or replace the king pins any help is greatly appreciated. We have been told they are not that hard. We do have help to do them but any other information would be great. If you have info you can email us at eekjah2006@yahoo.com

Mama,

Replacing kingpins generally is not that difficult, if you have the proper tools. However, replacing king pins on a a 50+ year old commercial vehicle is another story. Usually involves much hammering, probably some heat and a fair amount of colorful language. The disassembly will be the issue. Reassembly will be pretty straightforward.

The 4104 manual I have describes the process in pretty good detail in the Section 1, entitled Front Axle under Steering Knuckle removal. There is a cutaway drawing of the knuckle, but no diagrams. If your manual is missing this section, let me know and I'll scan the pages and email them to you.

I would recommend taking the knuckles to a machine shop to have the new bushings installed, since they should be pressed in and will need to be reamed to size after installation.

A parts book is extremely helpful on jobs like this because of the exploded parts diagrams.

If you don't have one get one.

Great suggestion, Gus.

Mamacakes: I have a 4104 parts book, as well, and there is a nice exploded view of the Knuckle assembly. I can scan that page for you too, if you'd like.
