Title: wheel simulators
Post by: mikke60 on February 10, 2011, 01:47:06 PM
I have a chance to get a set of 4 wheel simulators.I have 1968  5a with 22.5 wheels. the hand holes are 5 in the front set and 2 in the rear. the simulators seem to be set up for the opposite configuration. Am I to assume all wheels are not created equal?

thanks,mike

There's two and five hole steel wheels. Mine has the two hole and I ordered two hole simulators.

I like to feel with my hand and/or the IR gun for temp to see if bearings and brakes are staying cool. Also look at lug nuts. You can't do that with simulators. If you want pretty. Go for aluminum wheels.

the inspection issues are a valid point I had not thought about. Alum is something I have looked at also, but the simulators presented themselves and I thought I might like them. Still 10 degrees here,so I still have time to think. thanks for the input, mike

With simulators you cannot see if you have a cracked wheel.

I have no direct experience but - for all the reasons above (plus a few more) - I've been strongly advised against them. But, hey, they definitely dress up the old bus!

Mike,

I agree with the others. I wouldn't suggest you getting those simulators. We could have given you ours. We simply put ours out for the trash.

We got rid of them, because you can't inspect the wheels. You want to be able to see if your lugnuts have rust on them. You want to be able to see if the rim is cracked. And I find it much easier to tell the temperature of the rim, to make sure nothing bad is going on.

YMMV

God bless,

John
