Title: 8V71 oil cooler
Post by: bevans6 on February 06, 2011, 10:50:27 AM
Is it considered good form, when rebuilding an 8V71, to replace the oil cooler, or to clean it and reuse it?  Can they be tested?  do they fatigue?

Thanks, Brian

It is not recommended to clean them, if they need cleaning send them out to a shop that specialises. Most any airport should know of a place. If you DIY its likely you will loosen up debris and turn it lose later into your engine. That said, it depends on the direction of flow and whats downstream. If the oil flows from the cooler directly into a full flow oil filter, as long as it dont bypass you might be safe. If does not flow directly into a full flow filter I wouldnt do it.

Clean it and reuse it. IIRC, there is a cleaning procedure in the manual. IMHO, it's not like your 8V71 is powering the space shuttle, so why not use it? Unless it is obviously cracked or rotten.

Clean it and air test around 100lbs  Art is 1/2 right DD does not want you to clean if you have had a bearing failure do you have the bundle type or single on the side of the engine

good luck

It's a single on the side of the engine, and there was no bearing failure, just swapping it over to the new engine.  it's extremely clean and looks fine, just an unknown age.
