Title: Storm!
Post by: 5B Steve on January 31, 2011, 06:08:22 AM

Just want to say hope everyone is OK and safe at home, looks like the storm across the country is gonna be a big one.

They mentioned that we might get up to "2 inches" of ice here in central Indiana.

In  SW Indiana 3 years ago we had 4 inches of ice. Damage is still  evident old growth trees broken down .now loose limb have gotten to a point of decay they drop out at will.  Elect was out for 6 weeks in winter for several. Lets all pray we don't have a repeat.I guess ice is our hurricane. Stay safe.  Bob

It's supposed to only drop 4-6 inches here but get more intense as it moves east. Cold and windy with light flurries right now.

Ed and Ace - thanks >:(  Some of us don't think that is called for :D

The high here tomorrow will be below zero yes, the high!!!! >:( >:( >:(

I have two battery chargers going right now to top off some batteries that don't get a lot of use.  Recall that discharged batteries can freeze and burst.  The bus is in the shop (unheated), but the AquaHot is on and I have a small electric heater going (almost impossible to winterize).

Damn Global Warming! One of you guys didn't buy your carbon credits and this is what we get for it!

Probably Ace in his 76 degrees.

I just blew 4-6" off the driveway. Still snowing a bit and I think more predicted for tonight.  Going to have to put an extension chute on the snowblower if the mounds along the drive get
any taller!

We are supposed to get a serious storm up here as well, and the direction is such that I'm supposed to get serious lake effect snow where I live in Hamilton.  What's ironic is that this in indeed supposed to be from global warming, apparently an arctic wind pattern at the jet stream level or some such has been changed so that the cold air is coming down here causing no end of grief, and the guys in the arctic can't run their snowmobiles...no snow!  Warmest season on record, supposedly.

I'm battened down, snow blower full of gas and I just bought 900 litres of fuel oil for my shop furnace.  Just increased the cost of my engine rebuild for the bus by $1,000, I reckon...

You know, Scott? I like the cold and snow to. Even when you have to be out in it, I don't mind it. The snow really breaks up the winter, and makes things much more exciting. I rigged a set of tire chains together for my truck today. I have never used them around here before, but I figure that I should have them in the truck just in case. I never use them around town, because I see the guys who break out the chains when we get six inches of snow, and I think that looks really dumb. It has to be bad before I chain up...

Chains!  I had a 2wd Ranger which I had made up a set of chains for. I was in Philadelphia in Jan, 1996 when they got 30 inches in 24 hours. I had gone to work that Sat
with about 8 inches already on the ground and when I came out there was at least 2 feet all around the truck, but dry pavement underneath it due to the wind. Nothing had
been plowed, including the city streets. I put the chains on and was literally the only vehicle moving on the streets as I went home that afternoon. I sure got a lot of funny
looks as I passed up all kinds of cars and 4wd trucks stuck on the streets. I only made it halfway up the driveway, though and spent 6 hours digging it out the next day!

What a blast. With a set of chains, that Ranger was nearly unstoppable!

At 11:30 we started getting thunder from the sleet and coming snow storm in Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  They are telling us to expect 12-20 inches of snow along I-44 from OKC to Joplin, MO. on Tuesday.  Glad I got the "emergency operations center" i.e bus fueled up.  With expected north winds of 20-40 MPH on Tuesday and Wed. with a wind chill of minus -15.  No thawing until Saturday

Anyone who says they like cold has never spent time in a warm climate during a Minnesota winter. Lets see, warm sunny skies with pretty skirt clad babes sunning on lawn chairs while bass fishermen fish bass in bass boats, or sitting in front of a wood stove dressed in a snowmobile suit, feeding said stove as fast as you can throw the wood in while the cold slowly emties your mind, while telling yourself you really like sub zero cold and huge heating bills along with a Polar Sun thats up for 3 1/2 hours before plummeting you back into arctic darkness.....

Thanks-here in Los Angeles we've battened down the hatches to make sure we get through the sunny weather and 62 degree days.  I'll never understand those that choose to live where you get blizzards in winter, tornadoes, and summers with high heat and humidity.  But yoos makes yoos choices.  I'll put up with the traffic, occasional earth quake and the weirdos of L.A. any day.  Good Luck, TomC

I'm actually a little concerned.

After five years, my USAF son and his family left Frankfurt, Germany this morning and flew into JFK, arriving today (2/1/11).  As of right now (2:30  EST) they're at the port picking up their MINI (in NJ).  They also have to get his BMW M5 (in CT) and drive both to Schriever AFB, outside Colorado Springs CO, reporting for duty by the 14th.  Google maps shows their route runs virtually right across the storm front the whole way. . .  >:(

Poor timing, I know, but such is life in the military.

Sarah grew up in MN, so she knows what winter storms are like and how to drive in them.  Eric, OTOH, is a CA boy, where the CHP makes you put on chains when they see the first snowflakes.  (He's never hung chains in his life!  I can hang chains on a bus faster than I can on a car, but I digress. . .)  He's got mad driving skills (can turn a sub-10 minute lap of the 14.7 mile Nurburgring racetrack in the rain, or consistent 8:15 - 8:20 laps in the dry), but very little snow/ice experience.

The MINI's got all-season tires, the M5 has a brand new set of snow tires all around, so I think they're good in that respect.

But I'm still "a concerned parent," and I just pray that they'll use good judgment and stay safe.

FWIW. . .

RJ,
I'd recommend they wait a day or two to retrieve the cars and then if necessary drop down to I-40 and shoot across to either Amarillo and shoot up US 287  or keep going to Albuquerque and up I-25.

They will have much better roads and when they get to CO or Albuquerque they will have the roads passable by then!

RJ,

I second what BK said. When weather is involved, it can often be worth it to go the long route.

That being said, they have plenty of time to get to CO. That is only a two day drive from there, for me. However, if they are taking it easy, or have kids along, you could stretch it out into three days, I am sure. For now, I would suggest that they drive (if that is their plans to leave right away) until they hit bad weather. For example, they might have you keep an eye on the weather, and stop at a major city, or a nice hotel to wait the storm out. The storm won't last too long, and especially if they take the south route, they shouldn't have many issues anyways.

FWIW

God bless,

John

Earlier today, the Oklahoma Governor called up the National Guard, some 140 troops, to help rescue stranded motorist all along I-44 from Tulsa to the MO. State line as well as on the H.E. Bailey turnpike.
Snow is OK, but this storm packed allot more energy than out typical winter storm.  Look out East Coast, more to come.

BK & John -

Heard from my boy Eric.  They picked up the MINI at the port in NJ, and are headed to his sister-in-law's place in Maryland, where they'll wait out the storm in cozy comfort with family.

When the storm breaks (supposedly on Thurs), he's going to catch a train up to CT to pick up the M5, leaving wife & little one at her sister's until he gets back with the other car.

They're hoping the weather will break enough that they can leave on Monday (2/7/11), which will give them a whole week to get to Colorado Springs - Lord willin' 'n the creek don't rise!

Whew!

RJ;
We lived in Colorado Springs for 10 years. When they are settled in tell them to try Navajo Hogans for dinner on Nevada Blvd toward town. Casual and great food. Also Carrabases Italian!

Sorry had to go the the Post back now.

Anyway You better tell him to jack up both those cars for winter and put 4 wheel drives under them. Most places up there don't use chain they either use all wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, studded tires (only in winter and have to come of in the spring) or brave it as he will see on I-25 Ice-capades. Signs say speed Limit 75 MPH and they think it means all year???  I counted 14 cars flip on the freeway one morning.

Ice is a big thing up there everywhere. Out where he is going to the east in El Paso, County the wind blows very hard sometimes up to 70 MPH gusts down through the canyons and out across the plains, with lots of snow drifts up to 14 feet high sometimes in January and February.

Now, sales taxes are lower out there than in the city!!!

Snows a lot in the winter but it generally only lasts a day to a day and half then melts off then the sun comes out again. Springs are best to have Bar-B Ques, Summer it will Rain and or Hail almost everyday through August. Most days he can set his watch for 3:30PM and it will start and be gone by 5:00PM you laugh but trust me on this.

The West side as they call it is fun and interesting Manitou Springs lots to see and do Hiking, shops, Gem shops, food places, and pottery. Garden of the Gods is absolutely beautiful for site seeing , Hiking, walking, Bike riding Mountain or whatever.

Lots of Golf courses including the Broadmoore Hotel up on Cheyenne mountain, One I think still at Pete field which is another AFB, Castle Rock and 2 in the City which are public. Enjoy

I would run south and pick up I-40 to Little Rock, head down 30 through DFW and floor it. OKC is virtually shut down and I would not want to try driving through that way, its not only bad west of Fort Smith, its bad west of OKC. 44 is closed, 70 in closed from St. Louis almost all the way across Kansas, havnt heard about 80 or 90 but they cant be good. West of Forth Smith I would not be surprised if I-40 is closed, or will be, as winds pick up and temps drop. Its not supposed to be above freezing for days west of here til Friday, but I wouldnt be surprised if its not til Sunday. Its getting much colder here (NWA) than was forcast up through noon today. Heads up, there is another storm getting forcast for Monday......

No one will forget this storm for quite a while.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions.

I'll pass them on to Eric & Sarah when I next check in with them.

Dave -

So you're familiar with Schriever AFB?  I understand it's about 8 - 10 miles east of Colorado Springs?  My boy said something about finding housing in a small town that's north of the base, rather than face the rest of the commute traffic EB and WB on the main base road.  Make sense?

The M5 is his "fair weather" car, it's one of only 1200 or so 1988 BMW M5s imported to the States that year, and virtually perfectly restored.  It's never really seen winter, so there will be LOTS of cleanup taking place once they arrive in CO!  That one never went to Germany, it's been stored inside, but monitored the whole time.

The MINI is a 2010 Cooper S Clubman with the 180 hp turbo four coupled to a six-speed manual.  Eric can hardly pry Sarah's hands from the steering wheel - she loves the car!  That's the main daily driver, and with the front-wheel drive, should be OK in the snow, w/in reason.  Altho purchased in Germany, it's a US-spec car, and BMW included "free shipping" back to the States when they got transferred.  As I said before, it's got all-season tires on it, but he's also got another set of wheels for it being shipped with the furniture and other household goods.  (Including a ton of Germany-only BMW parts to sell to his US Beemer buddies!)

They also have two other vehicles - a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee and his 325 Beemer track car.  Obviously the Jeep will get a work out in the winter, and the track car is strictly that - a track car (altho it's legal on German roads, it won't pass smog here.)  These two the USAF shipped for them, both are coming in at a later date, not sure to where or when, supposedly they're in the same big container that their household goods are in, IIRC.

Anyway, will keep watching the weather, and all those of you east of the Rockies, I really appreciate your input!!

;)

Yes to the north of Shriever AFB whats the name of the town. Tell him Stay away from anything south and south east of the city not really good areas. South West side is good.

North Briargate is Ok across from AF Academy and Falcon Stadium. A little better is Black Forest area ( Where I built some Custom homes) is a little bigger homes in a foresty area. Now the further he gets away from the Base the worse the snow and ice commute will be out there. That's out in Cow country flat and cold. The city by now as moved out there (Its been 9 years since we moved back to California) but still have some friends up there. Monument, CO would probably be too far away in Winter. Everything is really pretty easy to get to but in winter a little loner drive time.

The farther away from Academy Blvd the better also.

If you or he needs any questions answered if I can help just e-mail me. I will PM you with my E-mail

We only got around 5" out of this storm.  We got hit Sunday night before the main brunt of the storm hit the rest of the nation.  5" is really not a big deal around here other than snarling traffic.  It only took me about 20 minutes longer to get to work Monday, but I left pretty early.

I've lived in Minnesota for 35 years total.  I have never seen a vehicle with tire chains actually installed here in Minnesota.  I don't even know where to buy a set of chains.  I always figured that if tire chains are necessary that I am staying parked.

We have been missed by most of the bad weather, for some reason both this winter and last most of the storms tracked south of us, I love global warming so far.  We only have about 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground where normally we would have around 2 to 3 feet, possibly more.  We have all 4 wheel drive vehicles here, we'll buy 4 snow tires for all around and have excellent traction the first winter, they wear down to good all season radials for the second winter and by the third winter they are fair to good all season radials and by october we'll have replaced them with new snow tires.  Snow chains are vary rare here, michigan used to allow studded tires for winter use and they were life savers on ice but have been banned for many years now because of the idea that they tear up roads, which I imagine they do to a certain extent, I would think the safety factor would greatly outweigh any threat of road damage tho.

  Round 4?

I was up at 2 AM this morning, no snow. Woke up at 6 AM, we had about 4 inches. Its 4 hours later, we now have a strong 2 feet of snow at our house and its still snowing heavy. Some reports are saying 27 -30 inches in the Springdale/Lowell area, and western Benton county. I-540 is backed up from 412 for miles. People west of 540 are now reporting roof high snowdrifts. Warnings are going out for people to start watching for roof collapse. People stranded in cars are being warned to prepare to spend the night in their cars. A few hours ago people were laughing and thought this was was all pretty funny. It is rapidly becoming a very dangerous situation. Its forcast for winds to rise to 30 mph and temps to drop below zero by morning. This isnt Minnesota, people down here dont have mittens and Parkas and Sorells in their closets. They dont have snow plows and 4x4's in every driveway, and 100s of giant county plow trucks at their disposal to clear the roads...... I'm sure this will be National News tonight.

That is one thing I have noticed about southern states is the fact that they have little if any way of clearing the vast amount of roadways that they have compared to northern states. I live on an emergency route here in Nebraska and am only 7 blocks from my business. I haven't had a snow day for 10 years!!! ::)

That is one thing I have noticed about southern states is the fact that they have little if any way of clearing the vast amount of roadways that they have compared to northern states.

The folks up north think everyone in the south are hillbillies for not being able to deal with this stuff. But they dont take the time to consider the issue very far.  Its almost equivelent of thinking they need a plow truck in Hawaii or Key West. This storm broke a record that had stood since 1918.

All -

A quick update - my son, his wife and their 23-month old made it to Colorado Springs safely this afternoon.

They took I-70 from VA to CO, and timed their driving around the various squalls that came thru the area this week.

Whew!  Dad can relax now!

;)

Glad they made it safe. Amazing all the freeway closings and all these storms one right after another.

Have to say too, that for people who rarely have to deal with this stuff and really dont have the equipment that places up north have the luxury of, they get their heads together and help each other out on a level ive never known. It really looked like it was going to overwhelm them, but it didnt at all.

Only two minor accidents ive heard of, everyone unstuck and/or brought home, everyone high and dry. Could be 60F by saturday and most everyone figures this will all be gone and a bad memory by early next week. I said I would have to see it to believe it, but even the news said to take a picture, it will be gone before ya know it. All time record snowfall for this area.

Anymore coming??? Any more records we gotta break anywhere? Phoenix hasnt been dumped on yet, Miami would look funny with a foot of snow. How about Key West or Honalulu?? Spread the love.

I'd rather live in Antarctica. Nice weather in Cali is like the Devil with a smile.
