Title: ENGINE PURCHASES
Post by: 5B Steve on January 05, 2011, 03:00:08 PM

I had the opportunity to be the new owner of these engines,   Silver 8v-92, 6v-92, and a 8v-71 with a 10 speed roadranger.

I pulled oil samples on all, and they are in "GREAT SHAPE"  by analysis.  They all run and sound good.  These are truck engines.

What my question is, can these be used in a bus if you change the direction of rotation.  The main reason why I bought them ,

because I have a 8v92N in my bus and it would be a nice spare if I had to do a change with some modifications.

Your MCI spins the engine in the same direction as a truck engine.  It's really only GM that are opposite rotation.

I have a 6V71 that has never been used, and is still on the pallet. It is available but I am not sure it would be a good spare for an 8V92 (LOL) !!

    Hey Paul,

The 8V-71 is a N, however I do know where there is a turbo one.

Steve,

Is the 8V71T a top or front mount? I would assume a top mount if it's out of a truck.

Just an FYI for the newbies and those reading that may not know this:
Putting a truck engine in a bus requires a pretty fair amount of work.  Many components on the engine need to be changed from the old engine to the donor engine.  If you are not in a position of "mechanical knowledge" (read-->able to do it yourself<--) you could end up spending several thousand just getting the donor engine ready to "slide in"  It is not a simple bolt in procedure.

    Thomasinnv,

Thank you for posting that, not being a mechanic I had no idea that it would be that difficult.

"Difficult" is a relative term.  Relative to the amount of mechanical knowledge you have, the willingness to learn more and the intelligence to be able to understand what it is you are trying to understand what it is you are trying to understand what it is you are trying to understand.  lol.

I always looked at it this way...if someone else can do it, so can I.  That being said, it is dependent on the amount of time and patience willing to be invested in said project, and the fore mentioned level of comprehensive ability.

I have talked to Steve about his 6V92.  I have a "presilver" in my 35 foot Prevost.  It only has 125,000 miles and hopefully will go for many more without a major incident.  But in the event the engine gernades and I need to rebuild, I have been told not to rebuild a green 6V92.  So I was thinking about getting a silver 6V92 and have it ready in case I need to replace my engine.  So if I have a "green" 6V92 will the components on it fit the bus specific parts on the "silver" 6V92.  It sounds like Tom's engines are in good condition.

FWIW guys those engines work fine in Eagles just the dumb a** things Prevost and MCI did on the rear that makes for a ton of work to fit very little work to fit in a Eagle and Chuck every thing on the green will interchange to the Silver, you may be waiting a long time for that old green to give up the ghost with 125,000 miles just keep pouring the oil to it and watch the temp

good luck

    Hey Guys,

I found out yesterday that Silver 6v-92 that I have is set up at 400 HP and has 35,000 miles on the rebuild. Question that

I have right now is,  "is it to much HP for a bus" or should it be good for a truck application?

Lot of buses out there with 400 hp 6V92 engines not a major chore to drop those back to 335 to 350 hp fuel mileage will suck on the 6v92 set at 400 hp and it shortens the engine life too

good luck
