Title: 'Hey, gusc, you have x messages, x are new'
Post by: gus on December 28, 2010, 03:47:22 PM
Why does this statement no longer appear when I log in??

I know I have a new PM but can't find it?

To see your PM's at any time, just click the menu bar button "My Messages".

As far as why you no longer get the pop up, there are two possibilities:

In your profile preferences there is a setting in the "Personal Message Options" section labeled "Show a pop-up when you receive new messages?".  Make sure it is still checked.

If you changed your settings in your browser or installed/updated security software, it may be that the pop up is being blocked.  In this case you will usually see an small notification of a blocked pop up either as a thin bar at the top of the browser window or down in the lower right corner coming up from the system tray icons.  In either case clicking on the notification will usually result in a dialog that includes the option to "allow pop-ups from this site".  We don't use pop-up ads so that is a safe option.

Mike,

I'm now doing this post all over from scratch. After I clicked "Post" I was informed that I couldn't respond because I hadn't logged in after I had been logged in for at least an hour and sent a few other replies. After I logged in again I was informed that "I had timed out" - weird.

Anyway, I solved my problem when I discovered the tiny arrow in the upper LH corner which is labeled "Shrink or Expand The Header", never noticed it before! Obviously I had shrunken my header at one time without being aware of it or it was never expanded to begin with. All this happened on my new netbook, not my desktop.

I have no menu bar button "My Messages". If I do I can't find it!

My "Show a pop-up when you receive new messages?" is/was checked.

Anyway, thanks for the help and the board.

Menu bar (at the bottom of the header) should read "Home, Help, Forum Rules, Search, Profile, MY MESSAGES, Calendar, Chat, Members, Logout, BCM Home Page, Contact BCM". Mine shows whether the header is shrunk or expanded.

The My Messages menu button should appear as shown in the screen capture below unless you are using one of the other themes.

The "time-out" would seem to indicate that the browser "cookie" got cleared or blocked.  Or else when logging in a time limit was chosen instead of "Forever".  (chosen in a drop down next to the login box.

One thing to check is your spam folder. If you don't have the BCM email in your contacts, the notice sometimes gets dumped there.

I know this has nothing to do with the BCM notice, but it might help you out for the future.

As far as I know I'm using the default theme, but maybe not?? I don't remember ever changing themes. Where are the theme choices?

My header bottom buttons are, Home, Help, Search, Profile, Calendar, Logout. Nothing more.

I'm on a totally different computer than yesterday, a desktop and my page is the same.

Gus, I looked up your profile and the theme is the issue.  It is currently set to the Babylon theme.  If you go into your profile (click your name on any of your posts), from the menu in that screen look for "Look and Layout Preferences" and click it.  Then choose "Change Theme" and change it to "Default Theme" by clicking "Use This Theme" on the line for the Default Theme.
