Title: Kohler part number
Post by: chuckd on December 28, 2010, 06:16:21 AM
On my Prevost (1979 Liberty conversion) I have a Perkins powered Kohler gen set.  There is a 12V to 120V transformer on the control board.  My parts manual is missing pages and I have no clue as to the part number.  Multiple attempts have been made at calling both Kohler and Liberty without any success.  Can any of you guys help with the number.  Much appreciated.

Chuck sure it isn't the other way around? 120 to 12V   let me know for sure and if you can't find it in your area  we have a Kohler dealer here. I have a 7.5 kohler and will try to find manual later today.  are you in Montanna now?

Working to find parts for my Generac unit I found the following web sight great help.  http://www.ordertree.com/ARI.aspx?Mfg=36&Model=1788-0 (http://www.ordertree.com/ARI.aspx?Mfg=36&Model=1788-0) 6,500 Watt 6500GCX use the drop down box to fill in some part of the model number and it found my generac unit right away.  Some parts they couldn't supply but the part numbers crossed over at ASAP parts right away.

Bob and Rick:

I have the schematics off of the Bluebird site, but no part manuals.

My Model is a 12.5 RCOP67 (not sure if that is a zero or 0)

Spec number 96636C

Bob it is 240 to 12 I think.

The schematic referenced is 269220

Liberty and Prevost could not help, and Kohler was not productive either.  I did not do the actual calling, (Long story)

So with that information can anyone find out the transformer part number?

Thanks in advance.

Bob I am not in Montana yet, waiting for my gen set to get fixed, and I am going to Washington DC to see my son promoted to a Colonel on the 14th of January.  (Off topic plug for my son)

Chuck

Does the genset run and make voltage? Mine has a controll box with a switch marked charge high low off. I would think that transformer or what ever is just for charging the battery I mounted a one wire alternator and keep it charged that way

Some of the old Kohlers came with a Power Boost Option. It utilized a transformer set up , I don't remember how it was configured. But here is a compnay that I used to get parts for my 7.5 gen set.

... I would think that transformer or what ever is just for charging the battery ...

Actually that is unlikely.  Usually the generator head has no connection to the start battery whatsoever and will run just fine off, for example, an air-start engine.

The transformer in question is more likely the one which provides voltage to the exciter.  If this is a transformer-regulated type set, then this transformer is also responsible for output voltage regulation.  In either case it is important that the transformer be properly matched to the generator head.

That said I do not have the answer to the part number question.  I am, however, quite surprised that Kohler support could not identify the correct transformer if you called them with the model and serial number of your unit -- what, exactly, did they tell you?

Congrats  on your son's promotion!!
I think this parts manual may help, although it doesn't seem to have a clear circuit board picture:

http://marinegenerators.us/kohler/lit/TP1018.PDF (http://marinegenerators.us/kohler/lit/TP1018.PDF)

It also doesn't seem to list a transformer for your generator using the numbers that you provided, although you obviously have one....

I got it!  Called Kohler with my information and got the transformer.  A smooth $147 worth.  I wanted a friend of a friend to try to find one for me, he is undergoing chemo for stage IV lung cancer (33 years old and never smoked in his life) and needed something to do.  That is why I was abit unsure of what exactly I was looking for.  But the right call made the difference.

Thanks to all for their feedback.
