Title: Is my throttle position sensor bad? (Series 60)
Post by: belfert on December 26, 2010, 11:37:19 AM
So I'm cruising along the road with the cruise set to 63 MPH.  My check engine light came on so I pulled off on the next exit.

My VMSpc is showing a 91 4 code that says TPS voltage low.  The flash code would be 22.  The check engine light went out, but it came on again about 5 minutes later and threw the same code again.

Should I be looking for a TPS for a Series 60?  Is this a hard part to find?  Anyone have a source in Nashville, Chattanooga, or Atlanta?

I wouldn't have a clue as to what you may be dealing with but you are lucky that that series motor is pretty common and most truck repair places will have what you need.

try without cruise    also ck plug on it and 2 hold down screws. Bk prob has one  or like Scott said about any repair shop at truck stop. I know you just had bat problems. ck 12 volt tap for ddec.

Brian, if you have the pedal with the slide and roller have BK clean the slide and roller they get dirty and cannot match the counts between the cruise and pedal and will give the 22 flash

good luck

Brian,

If this problem also occurs with the cruise off, I would check the cables and connectors as well as the ECM input voltage before suspecting the TPS itself.  The DDEC troubleshooting manual walks you through a bunch of checks before suggesting to replace the TPS.  If you don't have the manual, I can read you the steps from mine, however mine is a DDEC-II book.  If you have -III or -IV I would be someone else on here has it, too.

That's what I figured.  Probably most of the TPS diagnosis is the same, but someone with a -III manual would be a better resource for him

Hi Brian.  I am glad that the SilverLeaf helped to nail this down.

I have the DDEC III troubleshooting manual in PDF format.  The trouble shooting for flash code 22 is 14 pages.

Give me a call three zero three 478 three five zero one and I can walk you though it.  To be on the safe side, I am going to try to email it to you.

Jim

Email sent.  Almost 10 meg.  Hope you have a good connection :)

I'm thinking the problem was a fluke at this point.  I had an electric heater pointed at my feet running off the generator because I was cold.  My feet started to get hot so I angled the heater away from my feet.  I inadvertantly pointed the heater right at the TPS on the accelerator pedal.  I guessing the TPS got hot and started having issues.

I have not had any new errors on the road since I posted earlier.  I am not worrying about it at this point.  I'm more worried about where I should fuel up tonight.

Try http://www.gasbuddy.com (http://www.gasbuddy.com) -- go to state you are in and select diesel.  We usually find something on our route that's below the state average.

Brian, here is another site  i have not used it before but checked a well known route and it was spot on for truckstop/fuelstops.
http://www.findfuelstops.com/ (http://www.findfuelstops.com/)
hope this helps
