Title: Air compressor - return core or spare?
Post by: bevans6 on December 15, 2010, 10:16:47 AM
I am just about to go get my new air compressor.  there is a $450 core charge for the old one, which actually aside from being dirty works perfectly, I just wanted to put a newly rebuilt one on while the engine is out.  So - do I keep it as a spare or return it for the cash?  How far do you go with carrying the quasi-unique items of kit as spares?  My spare starter motor saved my bacon on my last trip...

Return it not worth the space the new one you bought will last 100,000 + miles

good luck

Or.....  swap it with a bus nut that has a not so good compressor.  :)  Then send the no so good one back as the core. :)

If you know your old one is still perfect, then there is some one out there that has a tired one you could swap with and meet both of your needs. How long did it take your old one to pump up a depleted system and shut down? Where are you located?

Well I don't know that it's perfect, just that it exhibited no signs of poor performance.  It would recover from 85 psi to 100 psi (the standard DOT air compressor recovery test) in about 20 seconds.  But it's at least 15, maybe 20 years old, it's a Bendix rebuilt unit already, and I would feel terrible if I swapped it with someone, they paid all the shipping nonsense and went through the pain of installing it and then it didn't work out for them.  My thought process was the engine it's on is wore out, it's at least as old as the engine, so if it isn't wore out it's getting on, so I'll put a new rebuild on.

Brian,
If it were me I'd hang on to it if it works like it should.

I'm not trying to go up against Clifford on this, just that several times the rebuilts we installed lasted very short periods before experiencing failures of one type or the other.
However you luck maybe better than mine.

I agree with Clifford a NEW one should last 100's of thousands of miles, but if buying brand new they don't usually require a core! So if you bought new (which even new parts fail), go for the core $. If you bought rebuilt hang on to the "spare."
Just my honest opinion.
