Title: MCI Power Steering Filter
Post by: MCIGenes on December 14, 2010, 01:28:04 AM
I have a 1975 MC5B that I am looking for a new power steering filter for. I called MCI and they said the originals are no longer available. Can anyone suggest a newer type filter housing that is supportable? Can I possible use a newer type off of a newer MCI or a Truck? The filter on mine may have been an add on over the years. I can not find any numbers on the outside of the case, but I have not taken it apart yet. Do newer buses use a power steering filter?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

If you are talking about the filter that is inside the fluid reservoir, then I would think you could swap the res. for anything you could find that has an easy to find filter.

It appears that the filter I am trying to replace is an add-on. It is mounted on the right side fire wall and has hydraulic hoses going to and from the case then to the tubing going forward. I will also check to see if there is a filter in the reservoir. Thanks

My MC-5C has a power steering filter on the firewall, where the quick disconnect fittings are.  It has no filter in the reservoir, although the internals of the reservoir kind of look like they might hold some sort of filter element.  The firewall filter is mentioned in the manual, I am pretty sure, so it's probably stock.  It looks like a little tube, maybe 2" in diameter and 6" tall.

Edit:  it's shown in here that there are two filters, one in the reservoir and one in the pressure line mounted on the firewall.  This is identical to what's on my MC-5, even though it's a MC-9 manual.  I guess I need to find an filter element for my reservoir and a new element for my pressure side filter, if both are required.  My reservoir didn't have an element installed.

The filter on the fire wall that Brian is talking about is the pressure line filter. It does not need replacing. It is a bunch of washers held together fairly tightly. You take it out of the housing, and clean it in solvent, dry it with compressed air and reinstall it.

Re. the reservoir filter, take it out. It likely will have a PN on it. Your auto parts store should be able to cross the number and find one.

I have an MC8 and this past summer I ordered the filter cartridge in the pressure line... mine is mounted on what looks like a frame rail on the curb side just ahead of the tranny.  Not to hard to reach going in through the curb side access door.  Anyway, the element looks like a bunch of brass washers held together... from MCI, costs me just over $100.  I was shocked at the price.

The reservoir filter has the number for the element on the top you remove to change the filter it will be a Nelson # any Napa store will have Napa # 1487 or Wix 51487 fwiw it is a very small filter inside the housing so don't be alarmed when you buy one

good luck

Thanks for all of your advice. Especially luvrbus for the numbers of the Napa filter (1487). Mine was so old that there was no way I could get any numbers off of it. I cleaned the inline filter and went to Napa and got the new reservoir filter. I may need to get a new seal for the inline filter if it does not seal correctly. The Napa 1487 filter comes with a new seal for the reservoir cover so I took the time to clean off the old paint from the outside of the cover and repaint it last night. I still may have a leak that is causing it to loose fluid but that is another on going problem that I will have to chase down. Thanks again for all your good input.
