So as my illness progresses into various stages, I find myself strangely attracted to buses of all types. This weekend I went out and bought a Skoolie. It's a 1990 Chevy C60/Bluebird. 8.2L Detriot/5 spd. man tranny. 12K original miles, Klam retarder, auto chains, 22.5 wheels, new tires all around, runs like a wristwatch, $1500.00, how could I pass it up??? (Please don't talk to my wife for a few weeks until she cools off).
Anyway, it has a Dana 19050S rear diff with 5.29 gears, 63 MPH@2750 RPM , not bad for a Skoolie. My question is before I look for a 4.88 diff is will the 19050T two speed fit in the same housing as the 19050S? I considered putting a two speed in Thomas, but was told I would have to change the entire housing since mine did not have a "bump" on it to facilitate the two speed motor.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. As yet, I have not found a wealth of info on the Skoolie sites, no insult intended, maybe I just haven't found the right site yet.

Sometimes I wish I had a two speed rear end in ours, just have never heard of anyone doing that on a coach.

It mentions a two speed rear axle, so maybe you can get some more info from them.

You probably (might) have a Fuller FS4005B five speed, which, if true (??) was designed to work alone and not with a two speed rear axle.
To really be neat and to end up with very close gears in the top end, you will need the 5 speed to match the two speed axle. That tranny was also...
...called a "short fourth" model. Still a very easy model to find and you might have some exchange credit with your "stand alone" five speed.
With the correct five speed, the two speed just about evenly splits the gaps in the five speed, except in the five speed's top two gears...
...where the opposite happens and the five speed "splits" the 37% drop in the two speed axle. Easier to visalize than to explain. Very close gears.
Anyhow, a Eaton two speed axle of the proper size and gear ratio(s) are also plentiful and fairly $cheap$. Go for it and have fun! HB of CJ (old coot)
Another thing you have going for you is the fact that basically all Chevy trucks in that range have similar axles. We had them in grain trucks with the 2 speeds. In the higher gear progressions it would be 4 low-5 low-4 high-5 high. The 5 speeds were common in the C 65 series trucks with the 366 and 427 gas burners. The 4 speeds came with the 350 small block.

Thanks for the heads up on the tranny/rear end connection, didn't even think of that. I have about decided that a change from the 5.29 gears to something like 4.88 might be a better approach. I like the 2 speed options, but I have to watch how much $$$ goes into this project, Skoolies generally don't bring much in the resale market. Doug@8000'
