Title: I was looking for a small toad...
Post by: Mex-Busnut on November 23, 2010, 05:43:49 PM
... and I found one that is unobtrusive, unusual, lite-weight. What do you think?  ;D

That appears to be more of a turtle than a toad!

Looks like a turd-al instead of a turtle!!  LOL  Alright laying all the bs aside.  I towed my bug for about a 250 mile trip the other day.  If I didn't have a back up camera I would never have known it was back there.  I could not feel a bit of difference in the drive of the bus.

We towed a subaru for many years it was 4x4 stick and towed perfectly 4 down, I've been talking to jamie about going back to subarus from grand cherokees again but haven't looked any over carefully, I'm not sure you can tow them 4 down anymore, so much has changed with them over the years, I liked that little 4 banger that gave me 35 to 40 MPG, I still have 2 of them in storage, a 91 station wagon and a 92 loyale, I like the looks of the new foresters, they seem to have a little more headroom, makes it easier for me to get in, right now I've got 3 grand cherokees, maybe the grand cherokee fling is over for a while.  The reason I went to the grand cherokees is cause it's sometimes hard for me to get in and out of a vehicle.
Title: Cool Picture...Do They Make A "Toad" Version?
Post by: HB of CJ on November 24, 2010, 01:31:15 PM
We once had a 1984 VW Rabbit Convertable that had been repowered with a new 1.6L German diesel engine. The gas mill was bad.  Had a 5 speed manual, but no A/C..  Fun to drive, if not exactly fast.

Got aroud 45 to 48 mpg with the top up and probably less with the top down.  Would have made a super "Toad" since the old VW Rabbit manuals can be towed 4 down.  Had about $2K in it.  HB of CJ (old coot)

I think I would go with a stock model. My daddy built a custom car once and I was embarised to ride in it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I have a 2005 stick shift, diesel VW Jetta. Anyone know if they are a good 4 down tow? Have gotten conflicting reports.
Thanks.

Why sure, i could tell you it can be towed. But that doesn't mean that it can. The ONLY way to be sure is to look in the owners manual for THAT car!!!! Do not trust anyones opinion unless you have a lot of money to throw away on repairs.  ;D

Ed,

That's not necessarily true.  Many vehicles can be safely towed even though the manufacturer does not say so.

According to Remco  http://4wheeldrive.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=4wheeldrive&cdn=autos&tm=5&f=20&su=p284.9.336.ip_p706.20.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.remcotowing.com/ (http://4wheeldrive.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=4wheeldrive&cdn=autos&tm=5&f=20&su=p284.9.336.ip_p706.20.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.remcotowing.com/)  all five speed VW's can be towed.

For example, Toyota Pickups are never listed in the Motorhome Towing Guide http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/dinghytowingguide/ (http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/dinghytowingguide/) but I know folks who have towed them for many miles without any problems.  The new six speed sticks may not be towable.

But can you really afford to take a chance? I sure can't.  I know two people that had vehicles that you could tow 4 down, but because they did not follow the procedure outlined in the owners manual it cost one of them $6000 and the other $4000. Sorry, but if it doesn't say you can do it in that car's book, i ain't gonna do it even if hundreds of others have done it. ;D
