Title: Shower tile floors
Post by: chuckd on November 16, 2010, 06:05:58 AM
I have a tile floor in my Shorty, and the floor leaks, and ends up leaking into the bay underneath.  I have looked at the floor, and there is missing grout on some of the tiles, none of the tiles themselves are cracked.  Is it possible to use a tile caulk and seal these cracks, or does the whole floor need replacing.

This really depends on how the shower floor was originally installed. If it was done correctly it will have a shower pan under the tile if that is the case the leak is prob. around the drain seal. If there is no shower pan then I would recommend replacing the whole floor as tile and grout are porous materials and will never be 100% water tight.

The tile and the grout don't make the floor waterproof, they just make it look nice.  What's under the tile is what makes it waterproof.  I would use a membrane type product like this:  http://www.schluter.com/6_1_ditra.aspx. (http://www.schluter.com/6_1_ditra.aspx.)  They have product designed for floors, walls, if installed correctly is almost foolproof and 100% waterproof.  I think they have a shower floor bed product that puts the correct drainage slope in too.

I used a fiberglass shower system in the bus, specifically to avoid the issues with tile.

Went back to the bus and re-looked.  Only one tile is cracked, but the grout is crumbling in places.  Talked to a tile person, and he is going to regrout, and reseal and we will see what happens, would like to avoid a whole new floor.  I looked underneath the floor and there is what looks like a fiberglass bottom under the tile.  Tough to see, but I think that is what is there.

Thanks for your insight.
