Title: Rivets and Rubber gaskets - NEEDED.
Post by: Chaz on October 05, 2010, 07:31:26 AM
Well, you may have been watching my other thread about putting a new paint job on my bus. In the process, I've found a couple rivets that need replaced. Question(s):
Where do I get them?
Do I need a special tool?
Some have already been replaced as they aren't buck rivets. They used "pop" rivets about the same size.

Also, I need to get a rubber gasket for my destination sign. The window itself is just plexi now, (was it glass?) and I need to relace it too. I got the gasket for the vista's and am going to do all three in Lexan. Obviously, I'm going to keep the destination and play with the ribbon. I did a thread years ago about funny stuff to write on it and I am finally getting closer to doing it.  ;D

Thanx guys,
  Chaz

Chaz,
I've used the large pop rivets with no issues.  I bought a large pneumatic rivet gun from Harbor Freight and it works great.  I've gone to my local industrial supply house for the rivets.  The only person I know of for the gaskets is Luke at US coach..

Good luck and keep up the pictures on your repaint!

Unless you really like the destination sign and want to change out messages frequently, why not do away with the glass/pexi and gasket and permenantly enclose the opening? We did that on our first bus and I was able to reduce my stress that I was having a leak in that area that I couldnt see through the new ceiling.

Just asking!

Thanx guys.
That's what I was looking for Eagle. There isn't much around my neck of the woods for rivets. Ordering them is the easiest for me.

I'll check with Luke as I do want to have the sign. I think it will be fun. People already get a kick about "BAND ON TOUR", "CHOIR ON TOUR", etc.  ;D  Plus, mine isn't enclosed my ceiling. It's original and easy access.

Thanx again!

The best rivet information I found when I had several of the riveted travel trailers built in the late 40's was on the airstream forum group. There is an "Olympic" Rivet that with the proper tool will look like the original rivets on your bus. The original rivets on the bus I think were put on with 2 people and an air rivet tool. (one person on the outside and one person holding a setting tool on the inside)

Google Airstream Forum and do a search there and you should find enough reading to keep you busy for a while.
