Dear Friends:

One of my mechanic friends insisted that I accompany him to see an old bus that is for sale. It is a 1982 Dina Olímpico, the Mexican version of the Flxible. It belongs to a band (music group). The guys had no idea the make or model of their engine (it is a 6V92T, and it appears to run well).

What was weird was that they said their tranny burned up and a truck shop put in an 18-speed transmission. I could not get under to see the transmission. The shifter says "Spicer SST" and has a lever with numbering 1-4. (only 1-3 are visible because of flash effect). There were several airlines departing from the selector. Is it possible that they really did put in an 18-speed transmission? See the attached picture.

By the way, I did not like the very high rust around the windshield, enough to let the sunshine in! and also when we finally got the batteries charged enough to start the engine, once the air pressure reached 100 pounds, by pressing the brake pedal 4 times, it would drop to 60 pounds and take 10 minutes to build back up.

Roadranger is made by Eaton.  SST with 4 way air shifter could be a 5 spd trans with 4 spd splitter. While that sounds like a 20 spd, there are repeating ratios so that you only actually have 14 spds.  It is easy to tell if it is this kind of transmission- the Spicer SST looks like two transmissions stuck together, while the Roadranger looks like one transmission.  Good Luck, TomC

Thanks for the replies. By the way, I did not this bus out for a spin, because it was blocked in by a parked truck for which nobody had keys.
