On our way home from this Utah trip, we plan to stop at Lake Mead. I also want to see the Hoover Dam. They must have some awesome pumps to push all that water through.

No pumps Lin, it is a gravity feed, uses penstocks to get the water thru and diversion tunnels. The dam tour costs about $12 per person and if you can get out to the marina, you can feed the fish, that is a hoot. Water is down now, and expect delays at the dam on account of inspections and construction in the area.

Lin, the 12.00 tour is not bad , you could go for the grandiose tour in which you receive a dam hard hat and the tour is more in depth, really you get to go deeper into the facility. inspection is not that bad, quick visual inspection by the Park police, and you are on your way! The key here is not to be too belligerent about the inspection and all is well. Coffee pot is always brewing and any and all are welcome to stop by. You guys enjoy the rest of the trip, and stop by if you can. we are located mid way up the hill between the Dam and Boulder City proper across from the Welcome center. 702-664-4265. Van

Yes sister, no pumps. Grand Coulee in Washington has pumps. I think it is called a pusher because the powerplant (engine) is in the rear of the coach and therefore .... pushing. We call ours a toad (short for towed) or little truck.

Yeppers, the powerplant tour isn't all that cool, she wants the dam tour, that is where you get to hear all about the dam, see the power plants, go thru the tunnels and wear yourself out. We had the power-plant tour 'cause we had the grand-babies with us. They still have the little movie theater in Boulder?

I have to disagree, if you are a first time visitor, the dam tour is a must do kind of thing. And the bridge is a monument, something that we can all take pride in, finally America has something to crow about! It should be open to traffic sometime this year, we were going to try and visit it, but it is still under construction. It sure is a magnificent structure an engineering marvel.

I went to Hoover dam back in the early 90's, it was neat to see those huge power generators. What an engineering marvel the whole site is!
I've only seen pictures of the new bridge, now that would be something to see in person.
It's worth the trip just to experience it!

November 16th is the scheduled opening, there is some kind of bicycle race on for the early part of Oct. The bridge is complete now, they are just cleaning up right now as the construction cranes are being dismantled. Boy I can hardly wait for the parade of trucks and semi's and the roar of their jakes as they descend past my house to the bridge ;D ;D, Oh Boy! ;D ;D
