Recently I asked for input on neat museums that people knew of around the country and got an amazing response. Tonight I was watching the show of the title of my post on the Food network and got to thinking, what neat food places are people aware of around the country where they like to eat and can recommend?
Here are the rules:
1) I don't need to hear that you don't stop anywhere to eat and only eat in your bus or at home, I'm not dropping in to eat.
2) No corporate restaurants! McDonalds, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Cracker Barrel etc does not count, I'd like to get a list of really cool, quirky and good mom and pop style diners, drive-ins and dives.
Thanks for any and all input!
-Dave
You need to divide this into at least states??
I agree but first I need something to divide. After that it could be subdivided many ways, sandwich joints, authentic Mexican, authentic Southern fare, by state, breakfast joints etc..
Here in Utah sadly we lack many in the immediate area of Salt Lake that I'm aware of anymore, most have closed. Ruth's Diner up emigration canyon is supposed to be really good though I've never personally been yet and the Belgian Waffle house was great for many, many years though lately they began getting cheap using imitation cheese etc. We love to find neat hole in the wall diners, restaurants and such when we're on the road.
David -
Dog House Grill, across the street from Fresno State @ Shaw & Hiway 168 in Fresno, CA.
Ever had a Tri-Tip Taco? Or a Tri-Tip Cobb Salad - so big, one order feeds two!
Great BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches, too.
Seasoned French Fries will gladly add inches to your waistline, but well worth it. A side order feeds two, a basket feeds four college boys!
Yum!
;)
David,
The Atlanta area is full of these places, but a few that stand out:
Ann's Snack Shop in East Atlanta, where they make the famous Ghetto Burger.
Mary Mac's Tea Room, just east of downtown, for traditional southern cooking
And, of course, the Varsity, near Georgia Tech, for traditional drive in fare.

My wife watches that all the time, it just makes me hungry.
Most of the places you seek do not exist anymore, all taken down one way or the other by the recession (which is now over by the way, yeah sure) and are hard to find. We recently drove over 300 miles after leaving Denver looking for one, we did not want to eat in the regular's that you mentioned (fast food joints). I am sure there are a some around, but they are far and few between anymore. It is a piece of the American landscape that has virtually disappeared.
At least that is my take on it.

Here in Milwaukee, WI. we are known for a wide range of great restaurants from premium steakhouses to simple hamburger places. But this isn't an official food board so I'll let you decide where you want to eat. However, we have a gem around here that has been around forever. LEON'S FROZEN CUSTARD on 27th and Oklahoma. This is an old style drive in type place that is open all year which has been mostly unchanged in both great quality custard and the appearance of the building.
Riviera Beach, FL, Becky's Garden Rd Cafe. Get off at Exit 76 off of I-95, Blue Heron Blvd, go East toward the ocean, turn left at the first light past the interstate ramps, 4/10ths on the left in an industrial park. Park on the right beside the canal or in the lot next to the building. BEST 50's/60's diner I have EVER been too. Only open 7AM to 2:30PM.
The gurls are purdy!

One of the best places to find a good steak, Joe Allen's http://www.joeallens.com/ (http://www.joeallens.com/)
They have won numersous awards as the best place to eat in Abilene, TX!
Another palce we discovered is The Little Pit, off I-20 in Clyde TX. Real good home cooked style food, best brisket I've had in some time. All cooked over Mesquite of course.
One of the best places we've gone thru was the Dixie Gun Works in Union City, BK's town, they got massive piles of old and rare guns there, I've never seen that many old guns in one place and many of them were for sale, Uncle Ned took me and BK thru on the family plan, was a real treat, we also saw the museum and Uncle Ned explained how the old stuff that we didn't recognize worked, there were so many things there that were from bygone years, long before our time, we were so glad that Uncle Ned was there to explain that stuff. ;D ;D
Country's BBQ in Columbus, GA. You get to eat in an old GM Silversides. We were there for my sons infantry graduation about a month ago. Excellent ribs!! Wife can't wait to go back.
Here is a picture of the inside and a link to the website; http://www.countrysbarbecue.com/ (http://www.countrysbarbecue.com/)

If you are traveling on I 10 there is a steak house at 20 miles east of El Paso at exit 39 out in the middle of nowhere named Cattlemans been there since the 1940's best in world has free overnight parking for RV few electric connections.
Get off the interstate in Texas and you will find some great places to eat best BBQ places in the states located in central TX off the concrete in Texas you will find smoked meats with 2 different kinds of wood I like the Hickory smoke better than the Mesquite plenty of mom and pop seafood places along the coast,German food in the hill country, Mexican food about any place, and great hamburger joints in the metro areas
good luck
Hinze's, in Wharton Tx, about a half hour south of Houston on the east side of highway. Great barbque, and all the rest of the food is awesome too. One year we spent the night in our bus next door, so we could eat there again the next day! (just love traveling with no schedule to keep)

If you like Mexican food, San Marcos Restaurant in the shopping center next to Walmart on US 220 near Mayodan, NC (just south of Martinsville, VA). Paula gew up near the Mexican border in AZ and said this the best Mexican food she has had since leaving AZ.
Not much big rig parking space, but if you are near Mount Airy (Mayberry) NC, stop at Snappy Lunch for a porkchop sandwich. Order it "all the way", they use their own recipe slaw on the sandwich.
For "atmosphere" and good food, you can't beat Antlers in Ste. Sault Marie. For something different, Stop at Cabela's at Dundee, MI (near Detroit) for an elk, ostrich, etc sandwich.
All this thinkin' bout food is making me hungry. Maybe we will go to San Marcos for supper tonight. Jack
I thought all the stuff at the gun shop was new. we still us most of it.

Umm I think you meant "Cody" ! I'm from farther south than "most" of the members here on the "board" as I was born in PANAMA! (and I'm sure you've heard of "Panama Red" ;) The US even named a canyon after me too! ;) )
;D BK ;D
Salt lake city, the Gaslight Inn, has about the best fish anywhere, I believe one kitchen services three restaurants. In Bakersfield, Mexican go to Mexicali or for burgers happy jacks, little hole in the wall but the best burgers in town. Basque food woolgrowers, great pickled tongue.
As BK said Lambert's, there was another place that BK and his MOM and DAD took us all to that was good.( don't set next to Cody or Libby if you want to have any food left on your plate though) Nice people. I don't like the BBQ in Texas they use brisket and I like Tri-tips my self. When I was down at Southwest research institute this summer we went over to a Mexican place about 8 blocks east of the institute in the ghetto really good food and then there was a Cajun place south west out by sea world that was home cooking. If you need the names I can get them for you.

Actually if you will remember you got to eat there twice! That is also the place you and I finally got some lunch, late the day we were out running errands and doing service calls by cell phone! (what like 5 help calls between us in 2 hrs? ;) ) Oh yeah same place Margie works (you call her "Maggie")
;D BK ;D
I heard you was deep in the heart of Texas! You gonna be at TBR? How is the app project coming along, I lost your email address.

Hey, I never bothered your plate, I was the one distracting you so libby could snag the steak off it lol. ;D ;D
Don, you just never ate BBQ at Coopers in Llano or Hard 8 in Brady both are open pit you pick your own meats pay for by the pound Sonja likes the 2 in thick pork chops lasts her for a week lol, wild game when in season both have tri tip for you outsiders and brisket for us Texans along with the smoked Quail, deer sausage, beef and pork ribs hard to beat that my friend.FWIW I don't the like tri tip Ca or Az BBQ
good luck
Hi luvrbus,
What part of a beef does tri tip come from? I may know it by another name since there is nothing called tri tip in Minnesota that I am aware of.
Thanks, Sam MC8
For Chinese Jake's in Belton Texas on 6th street. No room for bus parking though.
Sam,I never heard it called tri tip till I move to the west in Texas it was always a sirloin tip roast what is it called in MN.
good luck
try Choo-Choo's in Lagrange, OH. Breakfast any way you want, lunch is good, especially if you are hungry and order a Chooburger. the fries usually come on a separate plate because they give you so many. and the prime rib on friday is terrific. i think $15 for a great piece of meat, cooked and served juicy, with lots of onions and mushrooms. you can't possibly leave hungry, but you can get homemade pie to go.
Also Whitey's diner in Fremont, Oh. be careful when you order the eggs with sausage patty and home fries. it's hand made patty and about a pound of great seasoned sausage, and lots of potatoes. they're only open for breakfast and lunch, but they're liberal with great food. Don't plan on working much for at least an hour after eating. ;)
and whitey's is just down the road from my brother's place if you need any hard to find parts machined or corrected or welded. if you can't find a new one, he can repair or replace your broken part. Plenty of room for boondocking buses.
Another great spot for some ex cellant sea food is Moe's on the Oregon Coast in Lincoln City. Some of the best you'll ever eat, and I love to eat! If you like crab like I do, chow down on some Dungeness. The best tasting crab in the world!
Gosh, I miss that stuff!
Carl's Perfect Pig in White Bluff TN, not far from Nashville. Great BBQ
Heitmuellers at Elm Mott, Tx (no of Waco) for steaks.
White Front Cafe in Nevada, Mo. for great cheeseburgers.

Altho we call it Tri-Tip out here in CA, the "official" name is "Beef Bottom Sirloin Butt." Seriously.
According to a local meat market, the UPC code is 0763, and he orders them using "D-4524-AH."
Got a BBQ grill? Take one of these, season with Lawry's Seasoning Salt, Cajun spices or similar, wrap in foil and place fat-side up on the grill, preferably opposite the heat if it's a two-burner propane unit. Cook approximately 45 minutes for a two-pounder, turning once the last 10 minutes or so. Remove from heat and let it "rest" in the foil for five minutes. Slice across the grain and serve. Good on french rolls as a sandwich, or along with rice pilaf & a salad.
You can also cook them w/o foil, basting with your favorite sauce concoction, for variation. Still use indirect heat, tho - less prone to charring.
Yum!!
FWIW & HTH. . .
;)
We sure ran across some strange signs in tenn, it was the first time we had heard of pulled pork, my thoughts ranged in all kinds of areas until I saw the sign offering butt rub with sauce on the side, I listened but didn't hear any banjos so I figured it was safe to continue to BK's. I've lead such a sheltered life lol.
We don;t worry about how to cook them, just let Don get ahold of them Good eating.
uncle ned
Hi luvrbus and RJ,
We have sirloin tip roast here but no "Beef Bottom Sirloin Butt". I like whole beef tenderloin so I'll stick with that. It takes a little trimming but you can cut it with a fork when it's cooked right. I like to eat out once in a while, but home cooking is still the best. My specialty is country style pork ribs. I cook them on the grill, using oak charcoal, for 20 minutes then put them in a roaster, cover them with my home made sauerkraut, and cover that with a liberal amount of sliced onions. I cover the roaster and bake in the oven until the meat falls off the bones (about 3 hours). Makes my mouth water just thinking about it. My wife is the real cook in our family though.
Sorry for my off topic posts, Sam MC8
Bk why do ya think I don't drink. I cant remember my own name some times. How am I gona remember that little cuites name.
Cody, I have been told I cant find my butt with both hands more times then I can remember.
Sam.
I think I hear a bus rally half way between cal and Mn calling our names, we should have plenty of good food to eat. Ill bring the beef you bring the pork. Think we could get BK his mom & dad Uncle ned and wilma RJ Gary L kyle cody and libby and several other people from the board to come.
Don
In old Colorado City west of Colorado Springs, CO., Breakfast is at "Mountain Shadows Restaurant" Omelets galore and they pile it on.
And I agree on the TRI-Tips. Half the price of fillets and twice the taste. We get 1 package of them at Costco bring them home cut them up and we get 6 meals for about $16.00. Try that with a Fillet.
Split stuffed Peppers.
I split Anaheim peppers in half long ways. Poor a little EVO and Worcestershire on them. Then mix up 1 block of Cream cheese and 2 tablespoons of Garlic Salt. Stuff the peppers with it and put on the grill with fresh cilantro on top of them for 20minuts on medium heat or until the under side skin starts to turn black or brown and eat them up. You can do this with any peppers!!!

I remember a place out by there but couldn't remember the name of it. If that's the place I heartily agree, good omelets!
Another great place is Bubba's, in Jackson, WY
Great local hangout, with good food, generous portions, and fair prices.
On W. Broadway, between Wendy's and the Ace Hardware.
