Hey all,
I know folks love to refer to the 8V71 as the "318" because that was the average HP rating in a truck configuration but I have heard many times that MCI had Detroit detune them for bus applications due to cooling issues and for longer life between overhauls.
So does anybody know what the average HP rating is for an 8V71 in a 1981 MCI 9?
I believe I have the 65 injectors
Thanks in advance
Rick
280 HP:

The 8v71 bus engine for MCI was set 258 hp for Greyhound, Eagles were at 277 the Eagles cooled better than MCI if your engine has the 7E65 injectors you are at 304 hp,the 6v92TA in the MCI was 277 hp tons of the MCI with the 8v92TA were set at 365 hp that as much as they would cool what a waste of a good engine lol
good luck
John, thanks. That was about what I was thinking. So, that means at Eisenhower pass in Colorado at 11, 000 feet with my non turbo'd bus on the first day it was made (because obviously a motor with 100k miles is going to have even less HP) I would have cleared the pass with less than 130HP! If we lose 4% of our avalable power every 1000 ft we get above sea level that is about where we're at right.
I have to figure that my 8v71 (as good a runner as the old girl is ;D) would be down at least 30 HP from the first day it was made.
turn on the A/C and you'll have between 75 and 100 HP trying to push 31000 lbs up a 7% grade.
And we wonder why folks feel these things are underpowered...
RB
Clifford you are a rockstar!
The dude is like a detroit enyclopedia. The world is a better place with you on it my friend.
Rick
Clifford I just sent you a pm
Rick; just find you an old TV7101 turbo with a 1.39 HH and throw it on their. You would have around 335 hp and it will climb the hills a little better.
Don
Wow Don, that is an interesting thought. I'd have to find the manifold and reroute the air intake and exhaust. Would I need a waste gate or would it work with my current compression ratio?
You all know I'll never be happy without a little more power ;D ;D
Rick;
You should have room to mount the turbo over the gov. Use your current manifolds find a turbo T and make pipes from your manifolds to the t and then run 5" exhaust out make a y pipe and run thru your current mufflers. You may need to up grade your air filter assy and enlarge the area where it pulls air from. You would push around 7-9lbs boost so you could run your engine as is. Send me a pic of the engine compartment and I will give you a couple more ideas.
Hope this helps
Don
Don, does the standard 8v71 Na blower have oil return for a top mounted all I seen they return at the block,I have the top mounted horn for a 8v71 but it drains back through the blower your on a roll now Rick getting Donald involved with 8v71 that is one of his favorite engines were mine is the 8v92.
good luck
Don, Tell us more! This is very interesting! Maybe ours is a candidate after all.
I have a turbo from an 8v92 some good buddy by the name of Richard gave me to trade for one to fit our 8v71.
Paul
Clifford;
They did with the TA engines. What Rick can do is either find an industral mount, they drain back thru the head on the right side where the link rod goes thru. or The way I would do it is to find the remote mount turbo T and make a turbo mount off the front of the block maybe below the gov housing depending on the block he has. there should be two bolt holes where the after cooler pipe would come out of the block then make a plate to bolt to the drain back with a fitting and run the long drainback tube from a 60 and return to the side of the block. There is a pipe plug on the side of the block just above the pan rail.
Hope this helps
Don
Paul,
Give the part number from your and I will see if I can use it on one of my projects. May be able to do some trading.
Don
First, Rick, sorry for the hijack. ;)
Don, Part #R8927027
MDL TV8511
Donald, it is too late for Rick but I have the front mount for the turbo that drains back into the block but it belongs to Andy now I gave him the mount and maniflolds with the piping and we plan on using his TV8511 turbo going to install it in Dec along with a double cooler .
I'll keep my eyes open for Rick that was the standard for Eagles till they went to the top mount on the 92 series, but I believe because of the long belt driving the fan on a MCI it needs to be top mounted or side mount could be wrong on that.
You have to admire the MCI guys that is the hardest bus to work on I been around and they get it done
good luck
Don, Clifford and gang
Now that you got me started I have a couple questions. First, since I don't have an aftercooled 8V71 turbo block how would I cool the air going into the motor? Second, and I think you guys already touched on this subject, how do i get oil from the motor to the turbo and back into the motor? Third, do any of you know where I might find that particular turbo or would a similar numbered one work? I found a TV 7301 but have had no luck finding much info out about that turbo. I found the y pipe and I'm really considering doing this. Also will it have to be timed differently and the rack rerun?
heck maybe I'll blow my 8v7 up and then I'll have to pony up for an 8V92...
Keep in touch
Rick
Rick, those old engines ran for years with a turbo without a after cooler or air to air cooler they just don't make as much HP
good luck
Rick,
A fellow busnut who shall remain nameless because I haven't cleared this with him, discovered that his MC-9 8V71 has C60 injectors when he brought it down here to have the rack run last week. He pulls an Excursion with that bus! I'm guessing that's one of those 258 horse originals. It also never runs over 140 degrees. (GUYS: are C60 injectors the stock injector for Greyhound?) Amazing. Now that he had the rack run the bus has more power but he is going to N70 injectors. That should make a big difference and now he'll know what it means to drive with by the temperature gauge. I've got C65s in my MC-5 and its kind of a pooch.
