Title: Shame on me for not double checking!
Post by: bevans6 on September 11, 2010, 02:06:50 PM
I trusted the previous owner when he told me that my spare fan drive belt fit the bus.  I just looked at it, said "Yep, that's a brand new Dayco belt", and left it at that.  It might fit a MC-9, but it ain't gonna do me any good on a MC-5C!  I checked that the alternator drive belts fit, but never uncoiled the fan blower belt.  Shame on me for not checking!   ::)

At least I found an oil leak.  The alternator vent hose on top of the alternator was loose to the point of almost falling off.  We'll see if that makes a difference.

You bring up a good point. My PO also left 2 spare belts in the bus for me. I also better check and make sure they are the right ones.

Hi Brian,
I also have two spare blower belts, one used and one new, but have never checked if either is the right one. Like you, I did check the alternator belts and they are right.
Thanks for the heads up, Sam MC8

When I got my bus, there were a couple of extra fan belts.  I never did check them, and when we did the transmission the bus needed a longer belt anyway.  After that I looked at the two the were there.  One was partially eaten through by mice, the other is too short.

Best advice I ever got on belts:

Buy a new one, put it on, and put the old one away for the spare.

Then repeat on some periodic schedule.

You know the belt taken off was good and the correct size.

Both personal vehicles also have the last serpentine belt coiled up in the spare tire well.

happy coaching!

Same here, never checked them.  Guess I better before leaving for New England in two weeks.

Well I didn't check mine and found out it was the right size on the side of I-80 at the bottom of Parleys canyon in SLC. It took out the AC belts, tail light wires and wire for AC pump clutch. My best advice is to replace them all if you don't know the history of your belts. BW gives good advise.
