Title: Under Heating problem
Post by: Eagle Andy on September 06, 2010, 02:40:52 PM
OK I have a ? for you guys , I took a 300 mile trip this weekend to Billings Mt , The Bus ran great with the new air throttle ran up and down the Hills with little or no effort towing the 5500 # Tahoe . Last weekend I did a complete service on the cooling system drained all the old green stuff out and replaced with extended life, replaced three hoses just because and everythnig went great.

Now I have had this issue since ownning the Eagle and having it in Montana . If the outside  temps are 85 and below I can't seem to get to operating temps 180 degrees for any lenth of time, if we are climping a relly steep grade it will get up there but just crusing around with normal driving i run about 170 maybe. Now I should explain I have two radaitors one in the front of the Bus that cools the 12 kw Gen that is tied in with the Engine thru the big Radaitor.

I bought a infared heat gun this weekend and on the way home I stopped at a rest stop and shot the water pump and hoses , this was after a hour of driving in some hill , nothing major but for out here good enough . Temos were in the 140 to 150 range both the Electric and mech gauges were dead on . Now Iam thinking maybe I need to put a bra on the front radaitor like I have on my Big truck at work . Any thoughts on this guys I know I need to be getting that 92 up to at least 180 Right ?  Thanks for any and all advice Andy

Andy,

I had the same problem in my Eagle 10 (6v92).  I changed both t-stats from 170 to 180.  It pegs at 180 all the time except on hard climbs, hot days, then may go to 190 on the hill.  They aren't that hard to change.  It's about a 2 hour job.

When you did your cooling system service, did you check the thermostat for proper operation? If it's stuck open, that's usually obvious. Otherwise, you can test it in a pot of water on the stove to see if it's opening when it should. If there's a thermostat on the Genny radiator, check that as well. If there isn't one, review the plumbing setup to make sure you don't need one. If it's done right, you shouldn't need to cover radiators except in extremely cold weather.

Ok after I posted my request I went out and started messin around , I decided to remove the stats and started on the passenger side , looked ok then I went to the driver side and took the hosing off and found the spring laying in the hosing. So I found my problem going over to the Detroit dealer in the morning and getting two new stats. Thanks guys for your replys.  ;D
