Title: Do you use a Dishwasher?
Post by: TomC on August 31, 2010, 08:20:56 AM
I've been thinking of installing a dishwasher in my truck.  18" models are made that hold 8 place settings (what we carry).

University of Bonn in Germany did an extensive test with 113 people comparing hand dish washing to machine dish washing.  Washing 12 place settings, they found the average hand washing to use 27 gal (as high as 53 gal) of water and use 2.5kw (as high as 5kw) worth of hot water.  As compared to using a 12 place setting dishwasher, 4 gal of water and 1-2kw worth of electricity (depending on drying cycle).

My question is-does anyone use either a full size 12 place setting or 18" 8 place setting dish washer in the bus?  Seems to me you could save alot of water.  But is it worth the 18" of lost storage space, the extra weight and cost of the dishwasher?  Good Luck, TomC

I have no plans to include a dishwasher. We end up planning our menus around creating minimal dishes to clean due to our current limited holding tank size.
A trash compactor would be a higher priority for our needs.

Besides, if you aren't washing right away, you'll have to rinse the dishes off (before the food dries on & becomes impossible for the dishwasher to clean), & wouldn't that increase the effective water useage by the machine?

Tom,

Those numbers sound too high to me.  Even if we use there numbers its not a lot of water on the low end.

How long would 12 place settings last You and the Mrs?

We carry 4 people and 4 settings, over that its paper and plastic.

We can do all the dishes with one sink of soapy water and one sink to rinse.

Using just the hand sprayer, it barely fills half the sink when rinsing in a medium depth sink.

We actually did a test on this for our boondocking plans.

I am all about "Do it your own way", So go for it.

But the Space is really at a premium in any conversion,  I vote for the extra space.

Best of Luck

Cliff

I have looked at a few also, Avanti and Bosch,  the stainless steel models are nice. At home my wife and I can fill a 30" in three days. But run it before then because it starts to smell. If I still have room after I start the kitchen in the RV I will put one in. I personally like them. Good Luck !

My wife has a belief that every faucet and electric socket are connected directly to the Hoover Dam.  We don't do much boondocking.

I've got an 18" GE.  We use it often.  Before I installed it the dirty dishes were always in the sink, nasty :-X
Now they are in the dishwasher until washed.  I never did actual measuring, but I believe we use less water now.

Never had a dishwasher in the bus. We use mostly microwave stuff, and we use a lot of throw away plates. I dont believe those numbers tho. When I do cook, I have learned how to use a minimal amount of water. I rather have the space, and not have dirty dishes in the washer. Also, dont want to use that much space to carry extra dishes. I do however have the compactor, and it is worth its weight in gold. But, everyone has their priorities. It is a matter of what works. Good luck.

That is on our wish list! I don't do dishes, does that give you a hint why! ;) We looked at the countertop model, looks like it would work for us.

I can't get through a 4 day excursion the way it is without hauling gray water away. My dishwasher is named Kris but she sure goes through a lot of water!

Install a separate water pump under the kitchen sink that has a very low flow rate or an adjustable flow control to that particular water line.
than adjust the flow rate to just above a trickle and tell the wife their must be a problem with that line (maybe a kink or something) and she'll after awhile will get used to making it work to her purposes.

Than after she has adjusted to making that work you can return the flow to normal and she'll be able to recognize the importance of water conservation in a rig.

KEEP in mind this is a solution I JUST thought up AND I am NOT married soooo YOU might want to take it with a very LARGE grain of salt...

The boss wants one and in the end it'll be her way anyway but I'm unsure. If anything I'd like a drawer dishwasher.
I'm going to wait because of cost and the fact I'm not there yet and if by the time I get there we agree that we still want one then I guess it'll probably be a drawer type.
