Some of the buses I have seen have green 6V92T engines and some silver. The silver appear to be in newer buses. What is the difference mechanically?
Thanks in advance!
I don't think that there is one.
From what I've seen, DD went to silver as their "stock" color on engines, starting with the Series 50 and Series 60, but it took a while to become the standard, so it's not uncommon to see "Navy paint" on non-S50 / S60 engines up to about 10 years ago.
Only way to be sure is the serial number anything above F83425 is the silver block 6V92 it came on the market in 1982 painted silver from the factory( some were black) pay no attention to the colors every rebuilder has different colors even the factory rebuilts some time are gray or green you should see the colors NJT painted the 6v92.The green block cooling was the major problem along with oil useage, still plenty of the green blocks in use today only painted silver
good luck
Clifford, ready for a dumb question? where do I find that number, I'm assuming my block is an older block being a 1981 bus, I could take a rag and wipe down some of the rust proofing to look at it.
Cody, I wouldn't even worry about it most of the green engines have been upgraded or replaced over the years DD had a program to replace those back in the 80's in buses and trucks, but there is still a bunch out there even in the 8v92's I am working on one of those as we speak lol
good luck
I was just concerned cause I looked at the clock and it was already closing in on noon and no crisis had hit at this house yet and I was feeling neglected lol. ;D ;D ;D
Cody:
TomC had a posting a couple of days ago about MTU building 2 strokes, and on one of the reply's is a link to the location of the model number.

Cody, yours should be right behind the water pump below the head there is a small flat spot and some have it on the block at the rear on the drivers side behind the oil cooler the choice is yours my friend but don't be disappointed if you don't find one I have 2 here that don't have a serial number check the tags on the valve covers that maybe the only place you will find it
good luck
