Title: Anyone using NAPA Premium Heavy Duty 40wt Oil???
Post by: Highway Yacht on August 26, 2010, 10:21:02 PM
Not trying to bring up the big OIL debate again but wondered if anyone has ever used the NAPA Premium Heavy Duty 40wt oil or know anything about it. I can't seem to find the ash content listed on their website and not sure what the API Rating of "SJ" means. I know that Cheveron Delo 100 and Rotella 40T seem to be the oils of choice for most DD 2 stroke owners since they were classified with the old CF-2 API rating and low ash content which was recommended by Detroit. I'm not sure if this Napa HD 40wt comes in gallons or not but it is stocked in quarts at my local Napa. They can order the Rotella 40T as well but just wondered about their on the shelf stuff. If the ash content is 1.0 or below, it would be so much easier to just run out and pick some up off their shelf anytime I needed it instead of having to always order rotella. I've always heard good stuff about the quality of the Napa brand. Anybody using it or know any of the specs such as ash content??

SJ means it's intended for gasoline engines, not diesels.   (The S signifies Spark, just as the C signifies Compression.)   When I bought my bus it had straight 40-weight gasoline-engine oil in it, and after ABC Bus put some CF2 40-weight in I noticed the Jake worked better!   I'm guessing there's a lot more to oils than simple viscosity ratings  -  any tribologists out there who know the answer?

I suggest trying to find some of the correct stuff instead.   There are good reasons that Detroit has specific recommendations for oil and coolant in 2-strokes.

I ended up ordering Rotella 40T this morning at 10am and they dropped it off at my local Napa store today at 2pm. It came in cases with 3 gallons in each case. I ordered 3 cases which equals 9 gallons since they had those 9 gallons at the Napa Charlotte warehouse and could drop ship them on todays run at my local Napa. I drained the old oil, installed new oil filter, and then proceeded to pour in the new Rotella. I poured in 3 gallons and when I reached for the 4th gallon, I noticed it was SAE 30.. After looking at all 9 gallons, I ended up with 6 gallons of 40wt and 3 gallons of 30wt. I poured in the 6 gallons of 40wt and so far it hasn't even touched the dip stick. I called Napa and they are going to drop ship me 3 more gallons of 40wt in the morning to make up for the 3 gallons of 30wt they sent in error. My bus is all but blocking my driveway and I don't want to crank it up until I get a good oil level.

With six gallons in there, I wouldn't hesitate to crank it up for a short move.  As long as you get oil pressure right away, it should be OK.

Well..I did pre-fill the filter which took almost 3 quarts...then I poured the other 5 gallons and 1 quart into the crankcase. I've got some air leaks so even if I crank it, I'll have to let the air build up before I could even begin to move it. I'll walk down and check the oil level in it now since I haven't checked it since I poured the new oil in. Maybe it has all reached the oil pan by now and will show up on my dip stick.

If you want the real stuff...the Delo 100 in the 40 wt...just go to O'Riellys.  If the counter guy or gal says they can't get it...just say, "yes you can!"  Have to get it in cases of 6 if I remember right.

I remember getting the oil changed in a new Ford Taurus several years ago.  I said put 10W40 in it...that's what I ALWAYS run!  The mechanic, now dead said you don't understand Jack.  These new cars have much smaller tolerences that the olders cars and in my case needed a 5W30.
I detroit said to use a low ash content 40 weight...that's what I would use!

I live in the middle of the sticks and we don't have an O'Riellys here. Thats why I opted to get the Rotella T 40wt since it still meets Detoits specs and can be ordered from our local Napa and picked up the next day. I know the Delo 100 has a little lower ash content than the Rotella T and I would have gotten that if my Napa store could have ordered it.  I know what you mean on the 10w40 auto oil. I also had to get use to buying 5w30.

I get my delo 100 right at the chevron distributor, they don't stock a lot of it but they can get more in a few days, got a 5gal pail and a case of six gals so i am ahead of the deal next oil change i just get the pail.
Don't know about other parts of the country but in the west i think there's a chevron distributor in about every town big or small.

The last time I bought Rotella 40 wt. I purchased enough for two oil changes. You never know what could happen on the road and this way you have a spare supply to haul around with you. We are lucky to have an oil distributor here in Abilene that stocks both Rotella and Delo in 40 wt. They had several pallets of each! 8)

NAPA and O'Reilly's can get it but they don't have any in stock. Don't ya just love it! Then the counter person says "What"!

NAPA does stock Rotella T 40wt in some stores. My Napa store is well familiar with the Rotella but keep in mind that I live in a town that has only one stoplight and one Parts House...and that is Napa.. When I went today to get it, they said the Charlotte store and High Point store had it on the shelf. They just shuttled it to my store from Charlotte. I ordered it at 10am and had it in my hands a 2pm. We have a lot of farmers around here that still have the old detroits in their Grain Trucks.

I also lived just a few miles from High Point at one time. I lived in Sedgefield which is between Greensboro and High Point. I spent many a summer days at City Lake Park in High Point when I was growning up.
