Title: 8V92's out of boat
Post by: Ed Brenner on August 19, 2010, 04:04:17 PM
Okay,  two friends of mine are going to be doing a re-power next month of a 58 foot boot. They are taking out 2 V16 DD or should we say 4 8V92 turbos. Two of them I assume would be useful (correct rotation) or perhaps all depending on how they transfer the power to the shafts.

My question are they worth anything to the busing community? I hate to see them just be scrapped or left to rot. I know the owner ain't going to want them sitting around. He doesn't know anything other than adding fuel. I might be involved in the removing process and thought if there was any interest I might see what I could get them for.

I'm sure exhaust manifolds ( heat exchanger)and associated parts are different but there ought to be a lot of useful parts.

Thanks Ed

Would the "wrong rotation" ones work in a transit?  ;D

As I understand it, any of the double block Detroit Diesels (16V-71, 24V-71, 12V-92, 16V-92) are purposeful built engines-meaning they cannot just be separated and reused as two engines.  They have unique engine blocks (the front block doesn't have gears for the valve train), unique crankshafts-the front crankshaft cannot facilitate a flywheel, and the rear crankshaft cannot facilitate a vibration dampner, etc.  What you could salvage from the engines are the four cylinder heads per engine (even the injectors are WAY to large for bus use), and maybe the blowers.  The water pump, oil pump, engine oil coolers (unless there are two) are unique to this engine.  Why are they taking these excellent engines out of the boat?  Get with Don Fairchild for rebuilding into tier 2 approved engines for smog.  Good Luck, TomC

How about I extend the back of my MCI9 say 5 feet and drop in this 16V92. Anyone want to drag race then? Kenny

In the 80's I did see an extra long hood Peterbilt with a 16V-92TTA-880hp and around 2800lb/ft torque.  Asked the driver just how fast he needs to go and he said-65mph up, 65mph down, 65mph all day long.  He had a mid mounted 6 spd Allison off road automatic transmission-pretty impressive.  Also saw a Peterbilt with a V-12 Caterpillar 3412B in it-also about 850hp and about 2650lb/ft torque.  Course now, fuel prices are too high for that, but Detroits DD16 at 600hp and 2050lb/ft torque comes close-and is incredibly clean burning.  Good Luck, TomC

You would need the fuel tank out of t6he boat too.  Then there would be no room for the bed.

Tom, you say that the Peterbuilt had a six speed Allison.  If that is a World, then the truck would have been pretty recent right?  Don't think they made that trans until the mid '90s did they?  Also can't believe that the trans would hold that torque.

I know that this is only a 12v71, but could you imagine a 16v92 in a bus LOL!don't know what trans is used in this one, but darn that is a lot of power to the ground LOL!

When I was driving truck out of Dallas in the late 1970's, my boss told me he went to a drag truck race and saw a truck with a Detroit Diesel (I believe he said it was a 12V92), that had the gear-driven blower plus two turbochargers on it. I wonder if a 6V92 would benefit or burn up with a separate turbo for each side of the engine?

My MC7 has a HT70 six speed that I was told was weak!  So far it has lasted 165,000.  It was original to the bus when built in 1971.  Was told no parts available, by stewart and stevenson!  Time will tell.  John L

Junkman, the only weak point on the 70 was the wet torque converter if you could stop the leaks they didn't give problems the starter leaking was a biggest hassle for me and had the 70 blow the double rear main seal on the engine a few times filling the engine with AT fluid that is about the only problems I had with the 70

good luck

Clifford,

you got it, what day would be good for you. We will also need to stop and get Bk and Uncle Ned to help us load them. Uncle Ned is looking at a couple of trucks for me, will load them in the back of those and you and BK can drive them back for me. When we get back we can put the CCTS kits in them then u will be tier II compliant and we can boost the hp and use less fuel at the same time.

I'm game! Shoot I just got back from the first vacation I've taken that didn't have SOMETHING to do with the business in 6 yrs, and I could get used to it!
Of course Don, we could find the problem with my 6V92 while you were here and say it's a "parts run" and then I wouldn't have to burn that hard to get vacation time! ;)

Bk well just have to take a extra day after the 92 and then who's knows, ???

What do think is wrong with the 92, you know, we may need Cody to help, don't we need someone doing the work while Alice supervises and we chase parts. lol

LOL! Yeah I can see that!
No idea on the 92 except that after it lost the turbo we have water/coolant running out of the drain boxes as fast as we pour it in. Haven't pulled the engine or head yet.

BTW I found you an awesome shop/property right down the road from us.
Niles told me "I wish you hadn't shown me that, now I'll be try'n to figure out what I could use it for." Then he mentioned "Hey wouldn't that be perfect for Don Fairchild?" ;)

Well, the talk about 16V92 got my tired old brain sidetracked and off to Bonneville where I was "associated" with the land speed record diesel truck:  The Phoenix.  It has a 16V92 with four turbos.  The record of over 272 still stands today.

I spent a bit of time and put together a tribute page (both owners have passed away).  Take a look:  http://rvsafetysystems.com/The%20Phoenix%20LSR%20Truck.htm (http://rvsafetysystems.com/The%20Phoenix%20LSR%20Truck.htm)

There are a couple of other two-stroke stories on that page.

Jim,

That is a great piece and tribute.  As it happens the MTU site http://2cycle.mtu-online.com/ (http://2cycle.mtu-online.com/) mentioned by Tom C is looking for two cycle stories.  Perhaps they would like a link to yours.

OH YEAH! Thanks Jim for posting your link to the land speed truck. this is the stuff i love. The USA is full of characters like these that you barely hear of. When i was in Fla late 70's we had a local mechanic (Tom Shively with a 67 Barracuda) who would swap his 440 Mopar once a year for his hemi motor and give it a shot at the Gator Nationals. I rode up the track one weekend with the 440 motor crouching behind the front seat. Looking at that 47 truck as it changes thru the years is awesome. Thanks alot you made my day. dave

Thanks guys.  I was afraid that this was a bit too far OT.

Bob, yesterday I left a message on the phone of the person that I think is Carl Heap's son.  I hope he returns the call or sends me an email.  I would have to believe that the truck is still around - probably in a museum.

I had heard that when Carl knew his time was limited, he made sure that the truck was parked and would not be driven by his son or any other person.  I think that is OK.  It was the end of an era.

I am so glad that I got to witness the truck as it evolved and got to know some of the fun folks.

Don and BK, I kinda figured I'd get drawn into the mix lol, nothing I'd like better, just wish I could do it right now but if don gets his shop set up next to Bks' it would be great.  one project I'm playing with now is how to get 15MPG out of an olds 403 in my revcon, Marty Moore in San Diego says I should be able to get at least 10 or 12 so I figured I'd shoot for 15, right now it seems stuck at 5 or 6 and he says thats not even a thought and not many people know revcons like marty, he's been neck deep in them since the beginning and at 80 is still a legend with them.

Cody  you could get a lot more than 15 mpg by replacing that big old GM motor with a VW rabbit diesel. Of course the only way it would move is down hill.

Have a nice day

Cody-you could replace that 403 with a 6.5 GM Diesel (I think it would fit).  Then 15mpg and more would be possible.  Good Luck, TomC

Only other motor that will bolt up to the bell housing is the cadillac 472, remember this is front wheel drive with a toronado style front drive.  What is being suggested is running the air intake for the massive 4 barrel up to the front grill to get a cooler air supply, changing the 2 inch exhaust to a larger exhaust with headers and advancing the distributor while running high test, I ran the idea past a guy at the chevy shop down town and he said that could make a big difference, it's already got duel exhaust and a massive 4 barrel but the gas mileage is horrible, me and jamie put a new teak interior in the revcon back in 2004 and replaced everything in the update from the roof ac to the converter to a new water heater, shocks, a total redo of it.  It handles like a sports car now but the mileage definately needs improvement.

Cody,

I'm sure you already know this, but.... Back in the day a lot of RV folks destroyed their big 440's by running them too lean trying to save fuel.
Title: Re: 8V92's out of boat
Post by: cody on August 27, 2010, 08:09:48 AM
Len, Marty Moore is kinda like Don Fairchild in a lot of ways, marty has been a revcon service guy since 1971, there isn't much about revcon that he doesn't know, where don knows and understands detroits, marty understands revcons, what he is advising isn't leaning out the mixture but actually running it richer but with more air available and cleaner evacuation of the exhaust, by increasing the octane rating to 92 or better and advancing the distributor slightly the mileage should improve conciderably.  The revcon will already squeal the tires now lol, it's got a powerhouse but the failing is the poor mileage.
