For all of you that are still using standard wet type batteries, you should check out Thermoil. It is a battery additive-that is added (about 1/4" worth) that floats on the top of the battery acid. It really cuts down on venting, water usage. I used it on my last set of 8D's and only had to check the batteries for water once a year. Really cuts down on maintenance. Check out- www.staabbattery.com (http://www.staabbattery.com). Good Luck, TomC
Someone else on one of the boards said a small amount of mineral oil does the same thing.
I wondered about this...... I know when cooking and boiling water I almost always put in a couple drops of oil so that the pot doesnt boil over (especially when cooking pasta). The oil sits at the top and keeps the water from evaporating or boiling over the sides...... it only makes sence that using some sort of oil in the batteries would keep the water in there as well.
I used mineral oil on my last set of house batteries. It worked but it also kinda gummed up my water miser caps, ( I may have had a little too much water in them one time) so when i replaced the batteries i cleaned the caps but did not put oil in the batteries again.
Does this stuff harm the plates if it gets on them due to low water?
Good question, but i don't have an answer for you.
the answer is in here somewhere, short answer is according to them, no...
