We are looking at coating our roof this week.
What have people used, and what works the best. We are thinking a brilliant white. We obviously don't want anything that will chalk up our bus.
I remember Anja (divinerrightstrip) had something from Home Depot that she used. I don't remember the product.
What other products are out there?
Ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.
God bless,
John
John, give Jim Smith a ring at Smith's Ultimate Lining in ALB NM 1-888-301-1403 that is some good stuff insulates ,helps with the sound, will protect you from the hail you guys get in the land of OZ easy to clean and will last forever he does a lot of buses and RV'S he can spray it in any color.
Tell him you are friend of mine then he will charge you double LOL check his web www.smithsultimate.com (http://www.smithsultimate.com)
good luck
DO NOT USE kool roof or its kin(5 gal bucket, latexy stuff) from home cheapo streaks down the sides and mildews badly....very unsatisfactory ..I had to apply yearly as the rain and intense fl. sun broke it down.......there is a long thread on BNO last week under ceramic paint that will help you.
I rolled on a Henry's product I bought at Lowes back in 04, no chaulking and I like it. It's an elastomeric white roof coating.
Clifford does have a great idea, but I didn't know him back then! ::)

X2
Which Henry's product did you use?
For the portions of the roof which will not be covered by solar, deck, etc, I am considering a thick layer of reflective foil (possibly gold-tinted), doped directly to the coach roof and to the sides between windows and stainless lower half.
The one problem with this is that after I get the deck up there, the reflection from the roof might be annoying, requiring a shade between the deck and the back half of the coach.
Anyone used a product called Black Jack ultra 1000? It's available at Lowes, and claims heat reduction of 30% and stays flexible too.
Yeah! That was me, I used BlackJack.
It was just a basic white, Elastomeric paint. I was looking for Henry's, but couldn't find the stuff anywhere in Rhode Island.
So far, so good! I mean, it was easy to put on, has been resistant to the moldy filth that the tree above the bus likes to share... flexible, yes. Of course, "Urge" hasn't really GONE ANYWHERE yet, or moved around, but I walk on the top of my bus a bit and haven't damaged it or anything. :)

I don't rememeber. I just bough the latest and greatest or so claimed anyway. Sanded the top and put on 3 heavy coats.
I used Kool Seal and have not had a problem yet, but things do not mildew much in the desert. I had considered using the similar Henrys product, and it probably would have been about the same, but I called the company and they said that they do not recommend it for RV use. Kool Seal, of course, markets it for RV's. I'm sure that there are better products like the ceramic ones mentioned, but this works fine.

Sorry, it must have been Home Depot, because I found it on their site.
I'm pretty sure this is it.

John, if you really want to use that stuff www.bestmaterials.com (http://www.bestmaterials.com) sells all different brands of it and yes they sell about 3 or 4 different grades of Henry also with some better brands
Good luck
Thanks for the replies folks. That gives us some good options.
Clifford, I don't have any particular thing in mind. Money isn't really an issue, so we really aren't looking for just cheap. I don't think that Jim's will work out, because I am not sure when we will be back through that area.....
We really don't want our walls chalked. Are you all saying that the Henry's and Kool seal chalks?
God bless,
John
I've had good luck with the Henry's Solar cool.
The Henry's product I used has not chaulked in the almost 7 years it's been on. But then again we don't live in a wet climate! ;D
Paul
may i ask why are you coating your roofs are they leaking ? i am just planning to paint roof when we paint bus crown
Crown,
Nope, ours isn't leaking. I just want something more reflective on the roof. It is a white right now....
I figure that would also be another layer of protection.
FWIW
God bless,
John
I used the elastomeric white roof coating to help cool down the interior temps when it's hot. It seems to work just fine, white paint is also a good way to go. Just the way I did it. One more thing, it's not as slick if it's damp or wet to walk on as paint would be. It has a rougher texture, but dirt also clings to it easier than paint. But a good hard rain washes it clean.
I think I used kool coat don't remember. The roof was painted white already but I was hoping that the kool coat would cool the interior more and as a side benefit might also seal any leaks not yet visible. I did half the roof and took a break. I walked back in the bus and the part of the roof I did was very noticeably cooler. It was like walking into the shade. The roof looks a little like a vinyl roof and does collect dirt but is worth the trade off. IMO
Has anyone used any of the variety of bedliners on there roof?
Results? Opinions?
Cliff
i painted mine with that white elastomeric roof coating from lowes/home depot. i noticed a 15 to 20 deg difference taken with a infrared thermometer on the inside roof skin. i did mine for the heat, not because of leaks.
I had a Linex roof sprayed on my 1996 S&S - Discovery - Polar white. I did not notice a significant difference in lack of heat at the ceiling. I did not notice the additional weight.
I am going to coat the roof of my Prevost with TC Ceramic www.tcceramic.com (http://www.tcceramic.com) coating and then consider a bedliner on top for additional protection.
Hey guys, excuse the 'tarded boy's questions, I'm not very familiar with this stuff.
What is the consistency of this stuff (Henry's)?
I assume that you just paint or roll this on? Do you do the entire surface or only seams and rivets? What is the dried surface like? Do you paint over or leave as is?
Could you apply it inside as well as an added level of safety? Can it be removed if needed? What is cleanup like?
