Title: New/used Girard awning arrived today (bad news) I am sure!!!

Well, I was so excited to get my new/used 21 foot girard awning today. The original pictures showed a nearly new awning that was never used. 2 months to arrange shipment and work to take all precautions. Shipper was made aware and willing to carefully transport the item. To my disappointment, the shipper must have used a fork lift to move the awning and when it arrived one of the other pallets of goods had actually collapsed and bent one protected corner. >:( >:( So, long story short, excitement was dashed as the awning now must stay off the bus, in its original packaging until the claims rep arrives and completes his report.

Anybody ever had the opportunity to replace the entire case of a high end awning? Cost and hassle! >:(

nother day in the world of bus conversion on a budget. Sure would like to drive up to Girard and get a new one installed!!!

That bites. I know when I was selling neon lights on ebay I found a UPS store that would pack it and do all insurance claims if needed. I don't think one ever made it to a buyer working. I think those guys on the docks just think everyone ships boxes of packing peanuts.

I was told yrs & yrs ago by a friend who worked at UPS part time (while a full time student), that the more "fragile, or Glass-handle with care" stickers a package had, it was an unwritten rule on the docks to use it for "football" or drop as many times possible....etc.
I don't know how true this was, or is today. But I do know it seems to be true! 98% of the packages I receive that are "marked" as such seem to look like they went thru "Desert Storm, or WW III" on arrival regardless of contents. While 98% of the "unmarked packages arrive in "excellent" shape! (Hmmm, seems possible my buddy was telling the truth!)

We went thru one particular incident where Setra sent 5 replacement drivers windows to me and everyone was destroyed in shipping! When # 6 arrived I refused to sign for it unless I could open and inspect it first!
The driver refused to let me open it and said "I'll just send it back as refused!"
I told him "Hey, I ain't refused it yet, but I wanna know it it's broken like the rest of 'm."
He told me "sign for it and find out!"
I said "OK but let me see it first." I took the box and shock it and could hear broken glass rattling and told him "OK now you can send it back as refused!"

He was very mad and told me "You broke that on purpose!"
OH he was SO lucky, I was trying to be "professional" about the situation or he's been picking himself up off the floor!
I told him "First off, I didn't break anything. Second, if you don't get the #&%^ out of my shop I'm gonna break your face, Third of all that's the 6th one they have sent me that you guys have broke!"
His response was (not get this) "maybe they are broke before they send them, or they aren't packaging them very well!"
OH god I didn't know whether bust him in the chops or fall over laughing at the stupidity of what he just said! SO I erred on the side of falling out laughing and told him "you gotta be some kinda ignorant to think someone would go to all the trouble off triple layering bubble wrap, double layering cardboard, and more bubble wrapping an already broken window, before putting it in a box and shipping it 6 times in a row!"
To which his response was "Well maybe they outta find some other way of shipping it!"
Oh I was so mad, I just said "Get out, and I'm sure they will!"

I called SETRA and told them what had just happened and they were furious!
The next thing I know I get not one but 3 different calls from 3 different people at UPS wanting to know exactly what just had happened and what was said "word for word"! I told the last one "I wish ya'll 'd record this I'm getting tired of repeating it", and he said "Oh we have been and are right now!"

Well the next day a Fedex truck delivered an unbroken window that was not as nearly as over-packaged as the last 3-4 broken ones had been.

Well next time I got a package from UPS, it was a different driver. And it remained the "new" driver for months. But he got hurt or something and the replacement guy was the same one I had had issues with, and when he came in all he said "was here gotta package for you", set it down and stuck out his little electronic clip board for me to sign, and left!

Several weeks later (next time I got a package) our "new" driver was back on the route. He told me the other guy had been busted down to a "relief driver" for his comments to me, and he almost refused to run the route when he saw he had to deliver to me again!
OH well win, some lose some, but one things for sure. My grand daddy was so right when he used to tell me "Ya know, sometimes it's better to keep yer mouth shut an let people think yer a fool, then to open yer mouth and remove all doubt!" ;)

I ship a lot of glass and have found over the years that Priority Mail is much better than UPS for safe delivery.  Of course, that wouldn't work for the items you are talking about.

I do believe that UPS considers a "Fragile" label to be a challenge.

The urban legend is of course receiving a badly creased envelope in the mail, upon which the sender had carefully written 'Photographs - do not bend!'. And scrawled underneath by the postman: 'Oh yes they do!'

I do not ship a lot of stuff, but use Fedex Ground when I do and have not had any problems.  Of course, if what I have would fit into a flat rate mailer, that's the way it goes.
