FRESNO, Calif. -- A Greyhound bus that originated in Los Angeles has crashed in the Fresno area, killing at least five people, according to authorities.
The bus left Los Angeles for Sacramento around 6 p.m. Wednesday. While traveling on Highway 99, a Chevy Blazer rolled in front of the bus, causing the driver to swerve to avoid a collision, police said. The bus went off an embankment and slammed into a tree.
Five people were killed in the crash and 10 others were injured, some seriously, according to police.
It was not immediately known whether the deceased were all bus passengers.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Terrible tragedy - I often wonder and listening to truckers, they say in most cases, it would be better to keep your course than to swerve to avoid an accident. Many I've talked to say in keeping their course consider it a controlled accident, while swerving can cause uncontrollable results. I'm sure it all depends on the situation but I think there is some merit in keeping your course knowing there is going to be impact.

I can say this with 1.3 million miles of driving cross country big rig truck, it is best NOT to swerve. It takes alot of training and constantly thinking about what not to do. Granted this bus may have been in an accident with the flipped Blazer, but quite possibly no one would have been hurt.
Another item along these lines-if you ever drift over onto the shoulder, don't jerk the steering wheel back. Just gradually pull the bus back onto the highway. Also, if you find yourself drifting into the median on a big highway, don't jerk the wheel back-will probably make you flip. Better to steer into the median, make a big loop and get back onto the highway. If you get stuck-it is better to be pulled out of the median on the tires, then to have flipped and destroy the bus.
