Title: We had a great 4th and found a great campground
Post by: cody on July 06, 2010, 08:00:33 AM
We took the grandkids to a campground about 70 miles from where we live, a place called Hancock Campground in Hancock Michigan, it is on whats called the Houghton Canal in the Keweenaw Penninsula, ships on lake superior use this water way as a short cut thru the keweenaw penninsula on their way to duluth Minn. We had a water front lot and got to watch the waterskiers and parasailers and boats going thru but the great thing was how well kept and nice everything was, plenty of room for the bus and for 22 a night you got clean 30 amp power and cable tv with about 60 channels, they have a nice dump station on the way out and easy access to everything with showes and everything.  For swimming the water was warm, just like a bathtub at around 58 degrees, town with walmart and all the other stuff is only a couple of miles away and the management were great, good place to stay but relatively unknown, they have several sites that are big enough for buses but the cater to all campers and do it well.  Right next to the campground is a city park with a great beach and playground for kids, easy walk to it but separate so the spill over isn't heavy, with boat ramps and paved roads.

Cody that sounds really great.  Why not join RVparkreviews.com and give them a review.  Every campground needs honest reviews especially for us bus nuts.  It would be great help if all of us knew which places can and cannot accommodate our sizes and needs.  This would be good for everyone of us to do.

swimming in 58 degree water???  THAT will result in some serious "shrinkage". We were pleasantly surprised with the warm water in September in Traverse Bay (way warmer than your bathtub).

I will check out this place, thanks. I love that area.

Wow, you guys sure are picky lol, you do realize the average lake superior temp in the middle of august is only 47 degrees, anything close to 60 is like a jacuzzi to us.

I feel your pain Ed lol, libby spent a couple of years in Hawaii back in the latter 60's while her dad was in Viet Nam, he was a career kinda guy and did 2 tours in nam and while he was there libby and her mom and sister were parked in a quaset hut on base there.  I think she would probably go back or at least I encourage her to do that lol.

Last summer, we were in the water in Lakes Michigan,Superior, Huron and Erie. Superior was by far the coldest (deepest and furthest north)and Erie was the warmest (shallowest).  Ankle deep was enough for us in Superior. Swimming was OK in Erie.  Jack

At the base of the Keweenaw Penninsula is the Ojibwa campground, it's on the water got  1000 year old burial mounds huge sites and it's a mile north of Baraga (and our place) lol, the hancock city park is the one we hit, another is McClaines state park north of hancock on the lake, then Fort wilkins at the tip of the penninsula, thats got an 1840's fort and cool stuff like old copepr mines and stuff, lots of stuff going on,  july 16 and 17th is a thing called the aura jamboree, it's an ethnic music festival where you got a bunch of jams going on and stuff.  Lots of places to enjoy.
