Title: effect on engine of injector timing

The 8V71 engine in my bus is a mystery to me, since it has obviously been rebuilt and modified from what it was when new.  It has brown tag N-65 injectors.  My problem is that I don't know if it has been set to standard or advanced timing.  The injectors are set to 1.460", but I know the rack was run by a shop that didn't know what the timing was, either.  The book says that if you are running N-65 injectors you should be set to advanced timing, and you should set the injectors to 1.484".  So my questions are:

If you have N65 injectors in an engine that has standard timing, what should the injectors be set to?  If the injectors are set wrong, what will happen to performance?

If you have N65 injectors in an engine that has advanced timing, and the injectors are set to 1.460", what will the effect on the engine be compared to having them set at 1.484"?

My experience is that it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference if the injectors are set at 1.460 or 1.484.  There is a way to find out if your engine is set at advanced timing or standard timing using a dial indicator on the cam, the procedure for this is in the book.
