Title: Filling Hole in Pop Rivet
Post by: Doug1968 on June 20, 2010, 06:53:32 PM
Fellows,

Anyone had good luck filling the small hole in the head of pop rivet prior to painting. If so what material was used?

Using a shave head rivet is the better solution.  But I have had success on a couple of occasions filling the center of a simple pop rivet with JB Weld.

Look on a rivet specific site for 'umbrella caps' for your type of rivet.

I think you'll like the look better than the alternatives.

I thought I remembered there being something like that. But couldn't remember the term and was coming up blank on searches on the wrong keywords.

Here is an example of them:  http://www.bylerrivet.com/products/items-list.aspx?cat=136 (http://www.bylerrivet.com/products/items-list.aspx?cat=136)

Fellows,

Dreamscape notified me to look for an aluminum plug that drives into the hole left where the pop rivet pin comes out of in the center of the rivet.

I Googled mushroom cap and found a company called Hansen Rivet in Pacoima, Ca. that had these. I phoned them an purchased a box of 100 for $17.00.

I will post how they work in a few days.

Thanks Paul!

Thanks,

Doug

I use thousands of these in my business. AS far as I know they are only available for 3/16 pop rivets. Also be aware that not all pop rivets are the same so the caps might not work with all of them. I bought some rivets and caps from different manufacturers and the caps would not stay in the hole. They fell out. So I "sqished" the shank with a hammer to deform it and they worked. Pain in the butt though.

Fred,

I had the same issue so I put a dab of silicone on the shank and hammered them it, has worked great so far. I figure it helped to seal the hole also. You are right though, not all pop rivets are the same.
