You might recall me posting a couple weeks ago about looking at a 5C. I always liked 5s from when we used to drive them at Brewster's in the '70s in the Canadian Rockies. Well this one is a very well preserved example. In really good shape, meticulously maintained, no rust, nice, classic conversion in oak, recent reno with hardwood floor, flat screen TV, new fridge, etc. all the bells and whistles, etc. Low mileage 6V92/HT740. Then I took Valerie to see it and she liked it ;D. So we made a deal and brought it home last weekend. I finally got around to taking some pictures and here they are. It is a 1977 that the seller tells me started as an airporter in San Diego, then was converted in '93 by BMI, paint by Stahr Design, serial no: S 12776 , unit no: 7401. Can anyone tell me some history based on those numbers? I have been going over all the systems to get familiar with them: lots to learn... Very exiting! First real trip is this weekend to a dirt bike race in Calgary.
Now I'll have to sell the Courier. I put so much into it...

Lost,
That is a beauty. Lucky you guy. More pics, please.
John
Sean,
Please note the muffler...errr....tail pipe design. :P No, not just "round"....sheesh ::)
WOW!!!!!! Bob
Very nice catch! I like the exterior paint design. 8)
Now go have some fun!
Looks great JC.
Gary
JC, a couple of years ago we stopped by Southern Oregon Diesel on the way south and that bus was there with an airline problem. The next morning in Northern California he passed us. :)
I still say the boys need the Courier to take to college. ;)
;D BK ;D
JC, i just took a look at the MCI delivery list on the web and just like my 5A, it shows no info on yours. Can you ask the PO if he has any papers on the history of it?
Well, Valerie collects horses... Why coulnd't I collect buses? I have 3 in the yard now counting the hockey teams 102D. I tell her they don't need feeding just sitting there like horses do. LOL.
This 5 has been all over the South and Mexico. Maybe some of you have seen it somewhere, like Ed H. The PO did tell me that he had been at S.O.Diesel and knows David Gregory who treated him well.
Very pleased with our purchase. It will do us for a long time. It is the kind of coach we could spend some time in. Three years to go till our youngest goes away to college. If he doesn't, at least he could look after the place while we are gone, maybe, LOL.
JC
hope to see it at Bus'N USA next week. I was looking at Swan Lake when I drove by Saturday to see if it was still there.
When you were in Vernon on the weekend to pick it up,you and Valerie should have dropped in . Ron and Linda stayed over in their MC-7. We would have liked to have seen it.
Gary
That's sure a gorgeous coach, JC. Hope you get many years of use from it.
Best regards.
Mark and Donna
Very nice looking
Gary, you were just in San Francisco. I didn't think you'd be back so soon, or I would've called.
JC
JC, nice looking coach forsure!
Many miles of enjoyment:)
Very nice looking coach JC.
Wow, perhaps the sharpest MC-5 I've seen to date!
Amazing how a new dash (and just about new-everything else), can make an old coach's interior look so much more up to date. Dash upgrade is now on my to-do list.
As others have said, great looking coach. I hope you get many miles and days of enjoyment with it.
Best wishes, Sam MC8
Nice looking ride....I don't really like modern RV style interiors but that one is a nice blend of old and new. And the exterior is sharp, when I was a kid I always like the 3 axle buses...but these days I like the shorter (? is this a 35') buses and I prefer the clean look of a single rear axle, they jsut look sportier to me.
I do love a nice 5C, and that one is prime! I am staying with the bus windows on mine, for the exterior look, but that really makes me pause and reconsider... I do like the dash and front interior. I would love to see a picture of the engine install, to see how it was handled. My sedan door came from what I think was an ex-Brewster bus.
Brian
OK I'll take some pics today of the engine, and more of the interior.
My preference would have been for a stock looking 5, as I don't really like too much motorhome looking mods such as roof raise and after market windows, being an old bus driver you know... But this one is well done and looks good, actually still looks like a bus. It has a 8 inch raise, MC9 caps and Penensula windows. The interior will be hard to keep clean at dirt bike races, (it is either dusty or muddy). I'll have to insist everyone take their boots and muddy gear off outside the door. And I would've prefered a side isle, but hey, the whole thing is so nice and well done, it'll do!
Later,
JC
That is a nice looking machine. Hope it runs well for you. Have fun!
I looked at that bus in Baker City Oregan in Sept of 1996. It was owed by a couple that also had a 4104. I believe that they were the ones that had the bus re-powered and converted. After they had made a few trips in the bus they decided that they liked the 4104 better and put the five up for sale. I test drove the bus from Baker City to La Grand. The bus drove great and pulled Ladd Canyon grade over 50 mph. It was just like new then and still looks that way in your pics. They were asking $125k and I opted not to purchase the bus. I thought it was a bit high for a 35 footer. Still looks great and good luck. P.S. I remembered the bus from the painting on the back.
JPO
Nicely done! I like the dash. I did not think a 740 would fit in one of those.
Need a few more picks. I was just in invermere a few weeks ago, next time I will certainly track you down if thats OK.
Yes, the 740 will fit behind a 6v. It will not fit behind an 8v though without extending the back of the bus.
Well I'm so G.D. busy I couln't take pictures today. Tomorrow. We are painting the outside of the building at the gas station. Plus a million other things come up...
JPO: great story! The mural on the back is a picture of the space shuttle Challenger taking off. The owner's last name then in '93 was Challenger, and the bus off course is a MC5C Challenger... That is probably who you talked to in '96. And that is when my seller bought it I beleive, from what he told me.
I paid a lot less than that, I won't tell how much though... The seller is a very nice man who unfortunately won't be able to use it anymore for heath reasons. He got to enjoy it for a good 15 or so years going South every winter. And he took very good care of it. It is really good condition.
More pics tomorrow,
JC
Viento 1, Hey Randy are you coming down to BUSN" USA ? i posted on your facebook page too.
Here, I got a few more pics:

6V92. The turbo is on the left side.

Left side of engine. Muffler on the bottom, air cleaner on top. The turbo is accessible by removing the air cleaner.

i'm curious about the exhaust cross over pipes being wrapped. What would be the benefit? pro's/cons? Maybe i should have started a new thread?
(https://busconversionmagazine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi582.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fss267%2Flostagainphoto%2F004-1.jpg&hash=f869643af451723000882d4daf11b1837888c67c)
Right side of engine. Third radiator was installed back when they had cooling issues with the original 8V71. Has 2 electric fans switchable from the dash. That is when they also installed rad scoops and misters (never used but still there). Turned out a mechanic had left a rag in the blower (so the story goes...), and they decided to swap to the present 6V92.
Another one of the dash. It is corian.

I asked the PO about the wrap on the exhaust pipes. He said he did that not too long ago, I didn't catch why. Maybe he thought it would put more heat into the turbo to spin faster, and/or to reduce the heat in the engine compartment.
JC
JC, with that air cleaner your not even close for the air requirements for the 6v92 and the muffler needs to be a 5in inlet that looks like 4 inch to me in the photo nice find he did do a nice conversion I have 2 friends he converted their Eagles
good luck
Luvrbus, good eye! I'll go measure now. Maybe that is why it smokes black out the pipe at the slighest push of the pedal...
JC
thank you for the pictures. left side turbo is how I was planning to do a 6V92 install, if I do one. Tape wrapping does two things, it retains the heat energy inside the exhaust to allow the turbo to produce (theoretically and probably marginally) more boost, and it reduces the temperature inside the engine compartment quite a bit. More heat goes out the tail pipe, basically. it does work, I use it on race header installations when the header is too close to the bodywork. You can have fiberglass virtually touching a 1200 degree pipe.
Dash and interior look great, but all I can think of is why white? I'm like you, I play with nice dirty big boy toys, and there is no place for white anything in anything I own! ;D. Mind you the stock black dash in my MC-5C attracts dust like no other object I have ever known. Armor-All it and all I get is dusty Armor-All!
Edit: Is there an intercooler between the turbo and the intake to the engine?
Brian
Just measured.
Muffler in and out is 5". So is turbo out.
The vac. gauge on the air cleaner shows 15" of water column restriction. Isn't within specs? I don't have a service manual for the series 92 yet, but 15" doesn't sound too bad. I am wrong? The Filter Minder on my 4-71T shows about 10".
JC
JC it should be in the 8.0 range at 2100 depending on the A/R of the turbo but 8.0 is the norm for 90 injectors, the ECO air cleaner system is your best friend for the 92 series engines
good luck
The air cleaner canister is about 11" diameter by 26" long. Do you think a ECO filter that size would flow more air? I briefly looked at a site for them, and they show one about that size that flows 1400cfm at 8" restriction. Do I just go and find one to fit my canister, or am I looking for a bigger canister? Looks like I could fit a little bigger one in the space I have, with moving a coolant line and a couple other minor items. More air would sure clear up some of that black smoke when I put my foot into it.
JC
JC, you do not need a housing the ECO system is a all in one unit that filter you have now is a 900cfm and the V692 loves 1200 to 1400 I ran a 1550 on my 8v92 give the 92 series air and they will love you for it.
good luck
Luvrbus, thank you so much. I will look into the ECO filter. To think this bus has had this too small a filter for it since they put the 6V92 in it 17 years ago...!! I can imagine now how it is going to run with more air...
This board is great!
