Title: california trip
Post by: bigjohnkub on June 10, 2010, 10:50:29 AM
left Tyler TX. Friday, May 29Th and went to grandaughters graduation in Fairfield Ca. Drove brothers '78 05 silver eagle. No problems until Albuquerque NM.  Engine lost power and died. Expected fuel problems. No fuel filters in bus, but  another Eagle owner stopped to help. LARRY JONES TOOK ME TO NAPA AND INSURED THAT I HAD OBTAINED FILTERS AND FUEL. THANK YOU LARRY!!!!! We then went to Flying J and refueled. Starter went out. Could not make start. Good Sam towed to local Freightliner dealer. I rented 12 passenger van and went on. Four days later, came back . Paid $864.00 repair bill. Drove back to Tyler. Did the American vacation, went to Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, San Francisco, and Carlsbad Cavern. Had two grandchildren and daughter and husband with us. Wonderful trip. Awesome views, some hassles. Would do again.  THANKS AGAIN LARRY.

John,

This is not a reflection on what may have happened to you, just a general precaution for everyone.

If your bus does not start right up, and you continue trying without finding and fixing the problem, it does not take much time at all to burn up a starter.

I think a general rule is thirty seconds max cranking, followed by at least ten minutes cooling before another attempt.

That's not to say that I always follow my own advice.  I once moved my 4104 about ten feet just on the starter to get it out of harms way.

This is why they make starters with thermal protection, so not to burn them out.  Good Luck, TomC

John, Did the repair company say what was wrong with the starter? I had that problem twice, twice to many. Those things are heavy! If the starting batts are low it will fry the solenoid. How many batteries does he have and what size? Too much cranking to quick will cause them to get real sick, as was already mentioned.

Glad you enjoyed the trip anyway!

Is your brother going to make TBR?

Paul. it has 2 4dt batteries, same length, but not as wide as the 8dt. No road heat or air, just starts. I tried to jump starter, on side of road, and solenoid would engage, but not turn engine, even after charging bats an hour.
Paul , i learned my lesson. I will not leave home without spare, starter, filters, and larger tool box. I can run down the road on the battery charger. Both my 4903 and4107 have accessability to starters.
I don't know if he is coming to tbr, but we are going to try.
Len, thanks for your concern. I am aware, but we may have informed some who are not. I was taught many years ago , 30 seconds on ,1 minute off.
