Title: Delo to Rotella
Post by: AJ on May 06, 2010, 12:25:13 PM
I could not find Delo 100 in town for any price. So I am about to change to Rotella 40w for my 8V71.
Any body know other solution?

I changed from Dello to Rotella last year because I could not find Dello. I have put on almost 10,000 miles sense with no problems yet(knock on wood)

I'm running Rottela 40wt also. It is all I can get around here too. It does meet DD's specs.

All we have used for the last 10 years is Rotella T 40w.  50,000 miles and no problems.  Jack

For me Rotella is the first choice, not the "all I can get" choice...   I can get Walmart oil for half the price of rotella, which I have to special-order at my local Traction store.  Now as to actual differences or long term perfomance variations, I have not a clue...

I don't think my walmart has and DD 2 stroke safe oil.

40W CF2 is available at Walmarts in Canada. I heard a while ago that is not
available in the US as it is all sold to the Armed Forces

I can't get 40 weight Rotella here. 30 weight and 10/40. So I go to a big local distributor (Bosselmans, who the search on the net tells me to go to)  and they don't have either the Dello or the Rotella in a straight 40 weight. All they handle is a Conoco staight 40 weight and it comes in 5 gallons. I have no problem with that amount but they have no interest in getting me the Rotella or Dello at all.

CS, Do you have a NAPA or O'Reilly's? They can get it for you.

I take that back. Just searched my walmart tonight and found Rotella 30 only.   I thought they used to sell Rotella 40 though.

You should be able to order 40wt Delo 100 (Probably 40wt Rotella too) through O'Reilly Auto Parts.  The stock numbers are listed on the Tejas Coach site on this page:

Thanks for the links. My neighbor owns the local Napa store so I'll give him a try.  If not OReilly's.

As I have said before:

"Exxon XD-3 40wt is every bit as good as the Delo 100 and much easier to find.

I chuckle at those who think Delo 100 is some sort of magical elixir and they will go to the ends of the earth to get it. Delo 100 has reached some sort of overrated legendary status amongst the bus nut group. But, if it gives them warm fuzzies as they pour it in, and that's what they like, then that's OK."

I looked up the specs on Exxon XD-3 and it confirms it.  It is now well within the Detroit Diesel 2-stroke specifications:

http://www.exxon.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/NAUSENCVLEXExxonXD-3Monogrades.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle (http://www.exxon.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/NAUSENCVLEXExxonXD-3Monogrades.asp#SpecsApprovalsTitle)

While at it:

Shell Rotella TSG (Single Grade) does (barely, still right at the upper limit of ash):

http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/RotellaTSG.pdf (http://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/RotellaTSG.pdf)

Delo 400 on the other hand, despite its marketing claims, is still way over the ash limit according to a PDS on their site with a date of May 6, 2010 (yesterday).  It shows Delo 400 SAE 40 monograde as having a Suphated Ash content of 1.35% .

And of course the legendary and elusive Delo 100 is still spec'd solidly in the DD 2-stroke specification:

For easy reference, here is the official Detroit Diesel Oil specification (dated October 2005) (go to page 17)

If you go to Chevron's website you can locate the local distributor who usually has or can get Delo 100 - just picked up 2 pails @ $12 per gal - FWIW

what is the going rate per gallon?  I don't have a problem switching from 100 to whatever. Since it fits the ash requirement the almighty dollar will be the decider.  I now have an oil distribuotr that can order 100 for $11 and some change if my memory is ok this morning.

We paid just over 11 bucks a gallon for Rotella T40 at a local oil distributor here in Abilene. That was last year, I'm sure it's gone up a bit since. They had Chevron also.

I paid $8.69 a gal for Exxon last spring in '09. Last fall I purchased a 55 gal drum bulk and got it for $5 gal. Shop around and try to buy from a distributor and not a retailer.

I've been running Rotella 40T for over 20,000 miles now. Napa has it in their warehouses. We've got some two strokes here in the neighborhood so the local store keeps usually six gallons on hand.
