Does this mean you're going to run your engine without a muffler?  Good Luck, TomC

I could do that if I wanted to! ;D

TomC,

I switch between the 5" straight pipe and the muffler.  I've got swapping in and out the muffler down to a science.

I'll use the straight pipe if I'm towing my car trailer, or if I need more power for hills (say, Vermont).  The muffler I use when it's the family or friends.

I will say, there is an impressive, seat of the pants improvement in performance and mileage with the straight pipe.  I'll also say, it's loud.  Too loud.  If the engine was turbo charged, the sound level would be acceptable all the time.

Those far more knowledgeable than me may disagree but, that seems like an awful long time to run a dry engine.  I've done the same thing but always got very nervous after twenty seconds or so without coolant.

Len, that same thought was going through my mind also. I will be interested in the follow up on this question.

Relating to a 6V92. Besides being loud, what are the advantages / disadvantages and / or potential risks in running without a muffler? Without a muffler, is a turbo engine quieter than a non-tubo engine? Maybe a need to install a pneumatically operated muffler bypass !!!!!!!!!

We here at work design and build engine test equipment for production assembly lines. Several of my projects involved hot testing a large diesel engines without coolant. The tests were limited due to the time we could run the engines. Basically was a 30 sec warmup, snap throttle wereas we instantly went to wide open throttle and back down while collecting crankshaft velocities for fuel system function and power contribution followed by monitoring idle stability and then shut down. Engine run time was limited to approx 90 seconds. Could have been run a bit longer but customers would rather stay on the safe side to prevent any damage.

I thought I saw a coolant container out in the front with hoses going to and fro. Maybe I saw something else, it happens sometimes! ;D

all I know is that I don't feel quite so bad, there is a little puddle of oil on the floor on that one too.

On my 8V-71TATAIC engine, I used a Walker 5" muffler that had both the inlet and outlet on the same end, and is an oval by about 20" long.  It is rated for turbo engines and flows very freely.  Take a look.  Good Luck, TomC

I ran the engine a bit longer than I should have, I agree.  There is some coolant in the block f that makes any of us feel better!

I'll be swapping engine cradles this weekend and compiling all my clutch parts to built one good one!

My 4104/671 has a two muffler,s but no baffles. The MCI 9/8v92T has one muffler and it does not have any baffles,

Both sound great and are not over load
