Title: Prevost Engine Soundproofing
Post by: chuckd on May 02, 2010, 12:19:22 PM
I was looking around my engine compartment and did not see any engine insulation or soundproofing.  I hope it is not behind the firewall and between the rear closet and firewall, as that would necessitate more work for my sawsall.  Did Prevosts shipped to converters have insulation at the engine?  I need to hire some really strangely built folks to get it into all the cracks and crevices.  The 6V-92 is very audible in the rear bedroom (noisy too).

ck to see if rear engine hatch is secure to floor.should be in center of bus floor about 5 ft from rear..(inside under carpet) or bed should be a removable access hatch about 2 by 3 ft..bolts to floor...gives access to accessories from top...also ck your exhaust connections...good luck .....bob

Lead sheeting or sheet rubber deaden the sound.  The foam and foil stuff works on heat control. I heard where Pre's came with a thin lead sheeting on the entire floor, front to back, for sound control.  They are a quiet bus.  Of course the buyer could opt to delete that feature.

I think you need to commit to accessing the space over the engine and installing lead as it is the best and takes up the least space.  Has to be glued down.  Then add foam board or preferably spray foam.  The hi lines I have looked at had heavily foiled fiberglass sheeting inside the engine compartment.  Maybe you can access some of that surface but I think it would be next to impossible to get at all of it with the engine in there.

You should also have a hat problem in the BR after shutdown.  True?  Wet wrap the exhaust and turbine to get rid of most of it.

Thoughts and memories,

John

I have a 91 with an 8V that I am converting. In mine the behind the firewall separating the passenger compartment from the engine compartment, there was 1/4" thick high density rubber-like matting that was torn several places when I removed the back wall plywood. I repaired those areas and made a huge difference. I also made a new plywood wall in front of the original one with an additional 1/4" high density rubber matting from Supersoundproofing America in California. Then, like Robert mentioned above, the only source for me to hear engine sound is the engine access panel that wasn't screwed down properly. If it is down like it is supposed to be, the only sound for me is a gentle low hum. There is a company in New York that has roll lead 1/8" but the shipping for me to MO was cost prohibitive. Good luck with your project.
