Title: Shore Power will not work
Post by: Madmike on May 01, 2010, 06:28:18 PM
I wanted to test the a/c's on my 4106. It came with no information on the how any of the systems worked. I have tried to plug it in with the main breakers on, main breaker off, my 12 volt selector to bus with main on, and then off, 12 volt hook to Aux with main on and on, Stating batteries on with all of the above and then the inside cabin switched to dc with all of the above. I took the cord cap apart and checked the adapter. I think with every thing off and it trips the breaker in the house it must be the cord cap. Anybody have any ideas?

Is the house breaker that trips a GFI breaker?

Yeah, Steve is probably on to something with his GFI question.

Experience has taught me that GFI devices usually don't handle the floating neutrals with much grace, and a feller has got to learn how to properly deal with such events if he's gonna enjoy the bus life much.

Mike, could you tell us where you are and maybe someone in the area can come by to lend you a hand?  I assume you are trying to start your roof airs.

You are trying to run your bus off a house socket with an extension cord????  How many amps are your house circuits that you are plugged into?  I think it needs to be at least a 20 amp circuit to start/run one ac and even that may not be enough.

Yeeehawwww we have A/C. I want to thank all who posted. Esp Mike and Tom. I was pluging in to protected outlets. Once I found one that was not, she worked. So much for the cleaning job i had just done. I know i can't run both of them at the same time on house power but I know i had checked the manuals and i can run one off a house socket. I am now running one for about 30 min to get a feel of how cold it will get and then switch to the other. Now on to bigger and better things that is a big check mark off a list that is to long to print. I will post pictures today.

Now you need to find out why it was tripping the GFI.  The first place to look is with an ohmmeter on the plug between neutral and ground.  That should be an open.  If they are connected, then you need to work your way through all the panels and equipment to find and remove the ground from the neutral.  If they are not connected in the main panel, which they should not be, the next logical place is the inverter.
