I'm going to be coming down either I77 or I79 to this rally, I plan to leave tuesday morning and arrive at the camp site around 10 or 11 am Thursday morning. That means I am looking for overnights either south of Pittsburg on I79, or just north of Parkersburg on I77, and again around Johnson City or a little north of that for the next night. Any idea's? this is my spring vacation, so on the way down at least I'll try to avoid truck-stops and the like.
thanks, Brian
BTW, got our confirmation yesterday, registered with the campsite this morning.

Brian,
North of Pittsburg, Butler on I-79 I think there is a large campground at that exit!
It's been a few years since I've been in that area.

If you're looking for a good RV Park in the Bristol/Johnson City area, I would recommend Lakeview RV Park in Bluff City, TN. Along banks of Holston River/Boone Lake. This park is just South of the Bristol Motor Speedway Complex on HWY 11-E.
Brian, I am sure you know...but...I-40 is still closed at the NC/TN line.
But you are coming down I-81 to I-26, right?
Jack
Googlemaps has me coming down I77 to I81 west, to Johnson City on I26 south through Asheville. Is that OK? Should I go around via Charlotte and come in on I85 from the east?
I was looking at WV state parks and they have a place called Stonewall Resort. Anyone know anything about it?
Brian
I26 from tenn to nc is a beautiful ride. Be sure and stop at the rest area north of ashville and see "gods" country. the mountains of nc.
Also 26 south of ashville is sorta steep. Don't start down to fast.
Hope to be there before you. on wed if the dr. turn me loose
uncle ned
if not i will be on hy 11 with you
Brian,
Going through Ashville (I-26) is more scenic. I-77 to Charlotte and I-85 through Greenville is less mountains and hills. Your choice. Looking forward to meetinjg Ya'll . Jack
well, I've been to Charlotte, and I've never been to Asheville, plus I think the Jakes are working, so there you go...

Enjoy your trip. Jack
unless you just want to stop in Jonhson city you are only about another 1.5 hours away from Palmetto Cove. I recommend seeing caverns around bristol racetrack if you do.
Also, If you like a fun Bike ride, stop in Damascus VA( off 81) and cruise down the Virginia Creeper. The bike Shops have rides to the top and you can Coast back down to Town. A great 2.5 - 5 hours of fun without too much soreness, you can rent the comfy bikes cheap too.
The Virginia Creeper is an old rail bed that is made into a bike path. You can get a ride to White Top and it is a 17 mile steady 1% grade back to Damascus across all the trestles and such. When we went, a ride was $11 and included a bottled water and a bike rental was $11 also.
New campground in town.

Would be at a better break.
Well, to close the loop I'm set. Reservations at the Stonewall Resort in WV just off I79, which is part of the State Park system, and at the Lakeview RV park. Lets me have two short days on the road which will be a real change, I usually jam in 500 - 600 miles a day because my trips are usually all about being somewhere else as quick as possible, this one is stop and smell the roses...
Brian
Newbe mentioned the Virginia Creeper Trail...now I would not say I am an expert on it, however I have been down...and up..it several dozen times! It is one of the best mountain bike rides around. It is on the former roadbed of the Virginia Creeper steam engine train...Creeper because it 'creeped' up the mountain!
The first 14 or so of the 18 miles are basically downhill, and the first 4 are really fast!
The stream that runs along the bottom half is a GREAT trout stream in season.
As Tiger would say, "Just Do It!"
