Title: Delco 50DN Oil leak at mounting flange
Post by: NeoplanAN440 on April 08, 2010, 03:24:57 PM
Just coming home from a 2000 mile round trip.normally my engine was using  1 quart of delo 100every 1k miles.this time i changed to smittys super s  40W fleetgard.at the first 500 mile mark my engine started to use the first quart, and as expected i started to blame the oil for the usage.at 1k i was up to 2 quarts and i started wondering and double checking for leaks as i also had a slight oil film on my back (bus)allready.
i comes out that i have a leak at the adapter plate for the delco 50dn alternator.
its the first mount that goes onto the engine.

the alternator is supported by two adjustable bolts that just press against it from underneath.
one had come loose and was not holding the alternator up.
my questions,
how tight do these have to be????
can i allready skip my trip to amarillo, and plan to change gaskets this weekend??

i tightened them by feel and the leak is gone (for now),but i have two more 2k trips that i need to do safely.

I am definitely not an expert, but if tightening the bolts stops the leak, I would not change the gaskets.  I would think it should be torqued to factory specs and monitored.  Maybe you could inspect the bolts individually one at a time so you do not have to remove the alternator, and replace them if needed.  Someone who knows what they're talking about could comment on whether Locktite is an option.
