Title: Road Trip plan Tennesee Kentucky etc
Post by: Fredward on March 23, 2010, 08:16:43 PM
So the bus is all dieseled up ready to go. Saturday 3/27. We'll point it southeast and head towards Bowling Green, KY to see the cave and Nashville, TN for the Opry. Then maybe head kind of west towards Oklahoma City via Memphis to see some relatives. Returning home in time for Easter probably.

Any points of interest along the way would be good to know. Its easy to blow by stuff when you're on the highway. We're not trying to make time, just go for a one week drive and see some sights along the way. We love seeing things through the windshield of the bus. Also anything interesting for an 8 year old would be useful.

Bryce I assume you won't be packed up ready to move yet so I'll leave my dolly at home.

Fred, when you go thru the opry, if you have time, stop at the hall of fame part and see the exhibit of Uncle Jimmy Thompson, he was the first fiddler on the opry back in the 20's and was libby's great uncle, they claim to have his fiddle on display, interestingly enough, he had only one fiddle and I was holding it at my mother in laws house today, not sure whos fiddle they have but it's not his.

Fred,
Your more than welcome to stop in and see the new diggs! We are located 15 mins N of I-40  @ exit 108!
Gimme a call and see where I be.
We just met with the old owner tonight and he was cleaning stuff out and said he didn't see a problem with us having access to it by this weekend to get started moving in!
So chances are by the time you get too and through with Nashville, I could be looking for help unloading. ;)

Definately a ride on the General Jackson (steam paddle boat) and a tour of the Grand Ole Opry were my highlights when I was in Nashville several years ago. Country Music Hall of Fame was so so.

Fred,

If you have any interest in vintage instruments, Gruhn Guitars, corner of 4th Ave and Broadway. It's a nice stop after you've visited the Ryman Auditorium, which is just around the corner on 5th Ave. It's where the Opry used to be held before they moved it in 1974. Built in the late 1800's, it's been restored and is well worth a visit.

While your there, you'll want to check out Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and the Bluegrass Inn on the same block, as well.

Of course, this all assumes you have an interest in Country music.

I hear St. Louis has a big arch that's interesting to see. I haven't been there yet, but maybe this next winter when we go to FL.

Fred,

If you have the time, I would go a couple hours south of the city to just outside of Chattanooga, ( you will have to go over monteagle pass which is a good pull), there is a lake just before you get to Chattanooga that is on your left at the base of some pretty spectacular hills. The name eludes me but the place was just beautiful. The only negative was the volume of the highway at night. The camp was cheap and well kept.

The choo choo bus repair shop is right there in Chattanooga, go say ho to mike for all of us while you're there.

Everyone who know what the place is called please chime in.

I think that is Nickajack Dam?  Jack

Jack,

I should have known you would have the right answer! Fred, Nickajack lake is a pretty cool place to visit I don't know if it's worth all that fuel but it was one of our favorite places to get away from it all. If you go, think of us as you're crossing the scary bridge! You'll know it if you cross it.

One other must see is the Loveless cafe right off of Old Natches highway. Ask around someone there will know where it is. Best biscuits we have ever had by far. Big parking lot out back for the rig too.

Enjoy yourselves but it's gonna be 67 here next Tuesday so we aren't the deep freeze anymore!

Have you guys been to Ruby falls yet? Chattanooga. If you play any instruments, you might like the Gibson showcase. That is a dangerous place, though. That is where I first played my Earl Scruggs. I am just glad I didn't fall in love with a 10K dollar instrument...lol.

God bless,

John

Fred here in Louisville you have Churchill Downs home of the Kentucky Derby with a museum and the Louisville Slugger Bat plant and Museum the 8 year old would enjoy that.  South of Louisville at exit 112 is Beams Distillery which has tours daily.  At Elizabethtown you have Fort Knox which has the Gold Vault and General Patton's Museum.  The cave is an all day event depending on which tour you take.  Tem. in the cave is about 55* so dress accordingly.  Bowling Green you have the Corvette Factory and museum.  This is just a few of the sites along I-65 in Kentucky.

Agree with all comments on Nashville. I think it Country Music Road, same road as Camping World, has three campgrounds. Free music entertainment starting about now. Close to the area attractions.
Add Paducha, KY to your stops. A must see is the American Quilt Museum. Road through the 'Land Between the Lakes' is a pretty ride.
St Louis for the arch but not by bus as the parking is tough in/out and expensive. There is a campground in the downtown area, no grass just parking with hookups.

Hey these are great suggestions. What about the Mammoth Cave and the state park? That is a possible point of interest for us. We did Fantastic Caverns near Springfield, MO last year. KOA in Nashville sounds good; last time in Nashville we stayed at Two Rivers Campground; right by Camping World.
