I have a 1976 o5 eagle and I do not know what kind or brand of power steering fluid to use. Does it mater what kind of antifreeze you use for a diesel, Detroit 8v71. I am trying to learn but I know nothing about diesels.I really appreciate the help, thanks
i'm not the expert, but i use regular atf and yes, there is special antifreeze for diesels. best probably to get it from dd. i'm sure the real "experts" will chime in soon with varying opinions about the common antifreeze from advance auto parts, but i prefer to pay a few bucks more and hopefully not have issues down the road.
Jack, is yours a Belgium or Brownsville built Eagle the reason for asking most Belgium built Eagles didn't have power steering it was added later and may not be the same a factory steering
good luck
My old '54 671 calls for everyday ethylene glycol (green) auto antifreeze, but, as I understand it, if your engine has wet sleeves you need something different.
I don't remember if the 871 has wet sleeves but don't think it does.
my eagle was made in Brownsville Texas
Jack, if the reservoir is located on the drivers side in the upper corner use Dexron and there is a filter inside that needs to be changed from time to time.
If you have green antifreeze now stop at a Freight Liner truck dealer they sell the Alliance brand that meets DD specs
good luck
